@Snaf thoughts?

Map Legend in JPGs and PDFs have been polished and are much sharper/easier to read.
and you'll also find same legend but in different languages too.
That looks very good, I'll have to pull my GPSmap 65 out and try it. What's the best desktop app to open these please.

========

As requested by Treb, I have created a separate thread for Snaf’s questions.

App? no idea
PC you can use Paint which is free and many others
I don't know why you would want to open them up though- just copy them in your Garmin JPEG folder

For planning routes, we currently use MemoryMap on pc and Oziexplorer on Android with an assortment of proprietary, third party and home made maps.
I didn't know that you could access the Garmin images outside of a Garmin device, that means that I could take those images and create my own maps to MemoryMap and Oziexplorer without needing to change my devices to Garmin. I'll let you know how I get on.

RE: "that means that I could take those images and create my own maps"
These images were made by the AdvOsm developer as visual surface, road/tracks/icon reminders which can be placed in Garmin units- They are not maps.

Please create a new thread if you do as not to mix up this one which is about AdvOsm maps only- thanks

Ok, I thought these were maps as per thread title with a single map image, sorry for the confusion. Just to clarify, what is being provided is it an overlay, waypoint with icon that needs a garmin map on which it displays as a layer.

@Snaf
You're getting confused ! AdvOsm ARE maps given to us for free. See O.P #1
The map screen shots are to help those who want to see what they look like without downloading one (aka too lazy :whip )
The track surface images and road/track type are static images to remind us of what the legends are

I'm certainly confused when in one post you say they're not maps and the next you say they are. If I download one of the files to a garmin device that has no maps in it will I be able to open a viewable map?

A screenshot is just that- If you wanted to turn it in to a map you can do that too but it is labour intensive and you need to know how-

You can chose whatever map you wish from the O.P Mediafire accoun t which he has given us access to.
You can place one or more in the Garmin folder of your unit or on an SD (or other media) card
Doing so will enable you to use the Map on your Garmin and if you plug in the SD card in Windows Basecamp will read it too without having to plug in your Garmin.

@Snaf

Wapping has kindly created a new thread to help you here- feel free top ask away here. cheers

You may as well delete this thread Wapping as it doesn't answer any of my questions.
For some reason I can't message you as I'm restricted from viewing your profile or I'd have asked directly.

My appologies, I had guessed the last line above was directed to Treb, but apparently it’s me you can’t PM.

I am not sure what my profile has to do with map questions but I will try here again

I have answered the questions you have asked- what it is specifically that you don't follow?

You said "If I download one of the files to a garmin device that has no maps in it will I be able to open a viewable map?"
and I replied:
You can chose whatever map you wish from the O.P Mediafire account which he has given us access to.

You can place one or more in the Garmin folder of your unit or on an SD (or other media) card
Doing so will enable you to use the Map on your Garmin [/B]and if you plug in the SD card in Window then run Basecamp, it will also read it without having to plug in your Garmin."

I elaborated but could have simply said 'yes you can' I cannot fathom what is unclear but do ask again
Your GPSmap 65 comes preloaded with Garmin TopoActive Europe maps covering 44 countries.
You can copy and save these somewhere else if you need more space.
It also has an internal 16 GB memory and a microSD slot supporting cards up to 32 GB so you'd have to download a lot of maps before hitting those limits!

AdvOsm has done all the hard work- all you need do is follow his instructions to download his map/s.
It really could not be simpler-

As said previously, ask again here but please be precise in your questions to avoid any misunderstandings.

I think there's confusion between what images we were talking about, I asked about the Garmin image files within a Garmin device and I think you were refering to the images you'd posted on here. Then I got confused because you said "they are not maps" in one post and then AdvOsm ARE maps in another. I work with overlays in other apps and made an assumption that you could in Garmin, perhaps you can but I've not tried.

So one last question, can these AdvOsm maps be used or opened on any other device than a Garmin, a PC specifically. If so what app would I need.

I'll need to get an SD card for my Garmin before I can try it, it's a GPSmap 66s my earlier post was wrong.

Thanks for your patience.

Ps, It was Wapping that I can't message not you.

OK I'll try to clarify things a bit-Let us start again

AdvOsm has given us the product of his work for free-

From his post #1 you can read all about therm and download links are there.

As for "can these AdvOsm maps be used or opened on any other device than a Garmin?" , I have already answered you here post #31

If you have a Windows PC, installing Basecamp will allow you to see the maps, create routes/tracks etc etc etc
Basecamp is available for free from the Garmin website here. It has not be updated for a loooong time but still works fine- It is NOT an app but a piece of software which needs installing.
Download the .exe, 'unblock and click apply when you right click on the downloaded file then double click and it will install itself,

As far as your GPSmap 66s there are no pre-installed maps as far as the Garmin site tells me.
It has a max of 16GB of memory but not all of it will be useable as the system takes up some.
It has a micro SD slot so I would suggest you take a SD card, format it FAT32 ONLY
Create a folder called Garmin
Place all your downloaded AdvOsm maps in there thereby keeping as much memory possible in the internal memory- Garmin units don't like running on minimum memory.
and you're good to go.
The specs of what your 66s are here and you can download its manual free here
For batteries... you're on your own! :D

p.s do NOT download the HD (high Def) version- the O.P has already explained why - it's to do with display quality- the lines will be too thick on your garmin etc.

And
As far as which micro SD card (max 32GB and I use SanDisk ones) to chose and use see Garmin recommendations here

@Snaf Any good?:nenau

and just as an add'on...don't forget that the electronic compass needs calibrating in your 66s...
Read all about it here
I run this each time I head for the hills, change country, go through airports etc etc- it takes just a few seconds.

OK, I'm playing with it, had to create a VirtualMachine on the pc to use the map img files but it works. I'm havent found Briouze yet as I think the detail settings need adjusting.

I confess I have no idea what you are doing/trying to do.
Anyway you'll find Briouze around 48.698637 -368003
Enjoy the mapping.

I'm just looking at viable alternatives to the mapping that we already use (and know) and the possability of copying the maps to another platform which I think I've managed.
I've spent an hour or two setting Basecamp up so that I can cross reference locations with my other sources, so far it all looks pretty good but like all apps and software every one has its little foibles.
What is dissapointing is that place names are hard to read at any zoom level, am I doing something wrong because they looked ok in your screenshots.
The last two pictures are at the same zoom level, MemoryMap can be zoomed in and out without changing the base image or scaled in out for more detail which is much easier for finding places quickly. Basecamp can't do that and you need to keep changing the detail option if you zoom in and out. That's a Basecamp problem not AdvOSM but the extra detail that AdvOsm has is not easy to fully use if you need to zoom out often, but is very good at detailed zoom.
Re my post about finding Briouze, I can find it easily on MemoryMap as I know roughly where it is but struggled to find it on Basecamp mostly becasue it wasn't there until zoomed in a fair way.
Basecamp last zoom before Briouze (about centre) is shown as a name. Surely I'm doing something wrong.

I've messaged directly with the developer and had a quick response, I can increase the font size for easier reading. It doesn't resolve not seeing town names when zoomed out but have asked the question if that can be changed.
