Anyone ever had a driveshaft snap at the front U/J ?

Anyone ever had a driveshaft snap at the front U/J and then snap off the output shaft in the gearbox?

Interested to hear if you have.

And It locked the rear wheel up

ouch, seen it similar on a kawasaki, and one on a honda, worse wreckage that that, ill try find the pics, the honda was really bad ,

How is that possible is any explanation?

My one snapped at the same point, but did no damage
to the gear out put shaft, just made a mess off the right
hand pivot bolt that holds shaft cover in place. Think i have
old bolt laiying a round will try and get a foto, i put the problem
down to wear on bearings where shaft cover mounts to gearbox.

mileage was about 100,000 when it happened i think

What are the symptoms of worn UJs? I would imagine extra backlash and probably some vibration, but given Tourance rumble, flip helmet noise and ipod/earplugs,:nenau car type ujs last a long time and rarely fail catastrophically but are easy to inspect and often have grease nipples, can we get any lube into the UJs? or are they "sealed for life?"

Me trying to wheelie it:blast:blast:blast

Yes I've seen this before and it's an episode in my life I'd rather forget:o

That's it, that's the one you were after, mechanical paranoia - no known cure for it. So get worrying :thumb

thats the one, the snapped shafts iv seen are on drag bikes, same as wheelying:thumb2

The result of UJs being not correctly phased? :nenau

It has the later type of shaft with the splines indexed so it can only be inserted in one position.

It has wilber shocks fitted and the ride height is even higher than a standard ADV. Perhaps the articulation was too much for the shaft U/J :nenau

Bin there done that:o

Snapped the home extended shaft on my XS1100 based drag bike, eventually this forced my hand to produce a chain drive for the bike (sounds and looks an easy job, but it isn't:o)

No damage though

filling the swing arm with caviar couldn't have helped.

That maybe the rubber from the driveshaft absorber. But the french dealer ( happened in france, bike dropped back to me) removed what was left of the front driveshaft so i can't say for sure.

It's a no brainer then!

The height differences on both ends of swingarm were too big to handle for those particular UJs.

I reckon HPN fits different lenght shaft/or different UJs if they use the R1100GS swingarm on different rallye bikes that have suspension travel more than 250mm, thus the heigh difference variation is HUGE in GS-terms and probably stock shaft lenght+UJs aren't ment to handle such angles? :nenau

Mine let go at about 189k but it was after some serious abuse(a big boy done it and ran away:augie) it locked the wheel for a second, and then made the bag of spanners in a tumble dryer sort of noise. It didn't knacker the output shaft, but I had to make a slide hammer to get the remains of the u/j off the output shaft.Couldn't believe how much grief it had been given to be that tight and survive.

As for the indexed splines,we had three on the bench at the dealers, and no two were the same. It's all bollox that anyway

Mine snapped a couple of months back, no spline problems etc, just a new shaft and bearings etc. I'd just been doing a bit of light off road and dropped into Frome, going down a back street and that familiar graunching noise erupted from down below and i ground to a halt. Just glad i was bimbling down the road when it happened... high speed???:nenau

THATS IT, no more tales of impending doom PLEASE.
Im getting feckin paranoid about things seizing, breaking, falling off.
