So farewell then, final drive

Well there we go. Rumbling started on the M40 this afternoon, and play in the drive has got worse, so the final drive is toast. Just before the 12k service too (that's twelve, not a typo).

Anyway - it's a 2005 bike, so no chance of any comeback from our Teutonic overlords, so I'll get it rebuilt and we'll go on from there.

What I wondered was whether a lot of inactivity in the bike's early life (it only had 3k on it when I got it 2 years ago and I don't use it *that* often) might have caused any seals to dry out in the drive, or loss of oil film etc etc that might have hastened its demise?

A large gin now, I think.

I'd at least ask BMW if they thought this reasonable wear and tear.My experience is that if you ask in a non threatening way , they help sort it out , even out of warranty

No - just those particular final drive innards. It's a 1200GS, 2005, just under 12k.

I have often wondered if a lot of none use could make things worse. No proof of course but it's a reasonable theory especially since yours is an early one and the pinion bearing is likely toast as well.

Get the drive rebuilt rather than simply changing the main bearing. The earlier pinion bearing seems to be marginal for strength.

Seriously, get it rebuilt with good bearings etc and you'll be good to go for many happy miles

Yes - BMW (well, Vines) maintained that up to 1mm play in the vertical axis is "within tolerance". It's only ever had ~0.6mm play, so according to BMW, is perfectly OK. It's stayed at that level for over a year, but suddenly got worse yesterday. I've just measured it, and its over 2mm and "rumbling" which it wasn't before, suggesting that the main bearing is on the way out.

Mikeyboy from on here is not too far away for a rebuild. Might also be worth speaking to Motoscot who are just near Luton. Had mine done under warranty @ 18k but now at 40k its is starting to show a little play again. I will be talking to these guys I have mentioned when the time comes.

Mine came back from Mikeyboy a few days ago and feels as smooth as silk - nice job. His fixed price service also means you know how much cash you are committing; it includes the pinion bearings that dealers usually leave alone when repairing...
