Well there we go. Rumbling started on the M40 this afternoon, and play in the drive has got worse, so the final drive is toast. Just before the 12k service too (that's twelve, not a typo).
Anyway - it's a 2005 bike, so no chance of any comeback from our Teutonic overlords, so I'll get it rebuilt and we'll go on from there.
What I wondered was whether a lot of inactivity in the bike's early life (it only had 3k on it when I got it 2 years ago and I don't use it *that* often) might have caused any seals to dry out in the drive, or loss of oil film etc etc that might have hastened its demise?
A large gin now, I think.
