Out for a ride yesterday,(gs1150 66k on clock) on my way home, going for it on the dual carriageway 80ies+:toungincheek, bike seems to loose power and was very rough, got off the main and bike is very rough open throttle no go, popping & banging. I limp home and it wont idle stalls, pull the plugs and right is ok but left is wet & gungy so would appear that the left is not firing and therefore running on 1, where should i start looking ???? what are my possible problems? recently changed the oil, all the filters and gave the valves a going over but I dont think that has caused any problems, Electrical

SOunds like a coil has packed up... swap it for a good and see what happens. Perhaps someone local can swap theirs out for you to test.

If it's a twin spark, swap the coil packs from side to side and see if the problem switches as well......if it does, it's a coil pack breaking down

nope.. it would be wet... it would just put the bike very out of balance and cause it to either run very rough or not at all.

??? But if the cable had broke, then it should still start & Idle with a closed throttle as normal

You don't need a broken cable/wire... they tend to rot from the inside sometimes looking perfectly normal on the outside. FOr reference... by coil stick I mean the black rubber things that stick into the side of the cylinders and contact the ends of the spark plugs.

Ahhh - mix up I think Dohh!

I thought I was answering 'Boxer' about throttle cables

but you are 'Canuck' talking about the plug leads?

Apologies for confusion:blast

Haha.... almost there. I'm Canuck, talking about coil sticks that could be causing symptoms very similar to yours.

Symptoms Sound like a typical coil breakdown, or loss of fuel to that side, but that would leave you with either a clean, dry plug, or a clean wet plug...

Was it smoking at all before it got really bad? the plug should be wet if fuel's getting through and dry if its not, but should never be "gungey" , or sticky unless oil's getting into the cylinder?.... If that's the case, you may have blown a head gasket, allowing oil to slowly gunk it up and kill the spark on that side?

Do a compression check - it sounds like you've burnt out an exhaust valve.

OK Checked for sparks and both sides have a strong spark, so that rules out coil & leads, next job I think I will try is to see if injectors are squirting fuel.
Any more suggestions appreciated. And does anyone knows a good independant mechanic near me?

It has always smoked & used a bit of oil, but since I changed all the filters and put in some Silkolene 20:50, it has smoked less. I did have 15:40 in and I read somewhere that these engines tend to burn thinner oil so I went to the thicker stuff, it's like treacle!
