So if you've had a wc...

I wouldn't say a Fireblade was boring. How boring is it when your precious GS keeps developing faults as documented repeatedly on this site.

Methinks you wear rose tinted spectacles Mr Engineer.

He's doing a lot of sticking up for the WC, maybe feels a bit insecure about his purchase:D

Honda make some great products, plus are very innovative

Don't see BMW introducing a DCT gearbox on bikes, do we:augie

I am doing a lot of sticking up for the WC simply because it is the best 1200 so far - this my third - whenever a new GS is launched there is always the same old tosh from a number of owners of previous GSes about how the new bike isn't a proper GS etc etc

They can't help but knock new stuff because they are adverse to change and they hate the idea of newer bike outdoing their old one - it's natural, they can't help themselves - so I will continue to tell them that they are wrong and how great the new bike is :D

They do but make great products by some definitions, but to me they are just plain dull - the only one that comes close to being interesting is the Fireblade, but even that is just a very good sports bike and there are plenty of other more exciting models from other manufacturers.

I'd buy another.

Nothing has come out in the three months since I got mine that would make me do anything different.

Can you define dull ? or are you just parroting the oft said phrase because Honda make "boringly" reliable motorcycles and cars.

Now if we are talking dull, I had a demo ride on a BMW F800 naked something or other and at the time I had turned up on my 1999 Honda VFR800. Despite the BMW being new, I found it as dull as ditchwater.

No power, 2 parallel cylinder wheeze and just generally not a patch on the gear driven cam V4, despite costing what, 4 times as much ?

I personally think BMW motorcycles are way over priced for what they offer.

Oh yes, another anecdote.

About 4 years or so ago, a mate bought a brand new big BMW touring bike, something with 4 cylinders paid about £14000. Had no end of trouble with it and the last straw being that due to an electrical malfunction, he couldn't turn it of with the key.

In the end it needed a new wiring loom, and I believe it was out of warranty. He got rid pronto and bought a second hand Kawasaki GTR, which he rates as far superior and vowed never to buy another BMW motorcycle.

BMW have big reliabilty problems , we all know it and for the money they charge that's very poor, or maybe they have to charge so much because the cost of warranty claims across their model range is so horrendous.

Any particular reason you are hanging around here if you think BMW's are so terrible :eek

rather begs the question, why are you here then?

is the honda forum too dull perhaps?

Yeah but Hondas are boring - if you want to be boring, dull, middle class and reliable then buy a Honda.

.....................

..........and your antidote to the above is to ride a MBW

Sorry, but your comments so far lack any objectivity and are just the flip side of the same coin.

Actually, I was contemplating buying a GS, either a twin cam or a new LC. Like anything I buy, I want to do some research before I part with my money.

I, probably like many others, tempted by marketing and clever advertising.

At the moment, reading all the threads on here and you have to admit, there are a great percentage of posts relating to poor quality, break downs, serious mechanical failures etc etc.

I do detect that even Mr Steptoe, who I assume is an expert on these machines, comes across with a knowingly cynical attitude to these bikes.

As I have said somewhere else, I have a Yamaha Fazer FZ1S, 2008 , done 23000 miles and nothing has gone wrong, despite being thrashed on track, holidays to France, Italy, Germany and Scotland.

No corrosion whatsoever.

I have had a brief ride on a GS and have to say I took to it straight away, but that does not stop me casting an objective eye over the whole matter and have come to the conclusion that the GS is a superb bike in principle but is overpriced, suffers reliabilty problems and the general finish is crap.

When people tell you that they carry substantial spare parts with them when they go touring, and others that would not dare to have a GS without an aftermarket warranty, well, that certainly makes a prospective new buyer think.

I think GS ownership only works without worry when buying new and trading in for another new one before the warranty expires. Of course you are then locked into the whole BMW Buy, trade, service regime which costs a lot.

Oh Yes, please define "Dull" in motorcycling terms.

Chinese HD.

I'm sure that HD are in a very similar situation...

As long as they can claim 'Assembled in the USA' to keep the 'faithful' happy :augie

Just another good reason to buy pre millenium (or so) bikes :thumb2

About a year ago Victory run an advertising campaign, the main banner was stating something like "The Real American Motorcycle" and in the text it was mentioned that 85% of a Harley Davidson was made in China, which was a surprise to me at the time. However, as highlighted in this thread what isn't, and provided that the quality control is in place that's fine by me. My concern is that very substandard or outright counterfeit items are filtering into the commercial food chain, where the source is highly suspected to originate in China. From Helicopter parts to pharmaceutical medicines.

Problem with this place is there is lots of piss taking but not very much objective opinion :D:D:D

For what it's worth my last twin cam has been perfect and was planning to keep it for many years until I was recently T boned on a roundabout :eek

IMO - nothing particularly wrong with the new LC and more than happy to look at a new 2014 model to replace the TC ;)

PS - there is no such thing as a dull motorcycle :beerjug:

Your wrong, it's simply because BM continue to launch new models that have not been fully tested in real world conditions. Give it a couple of years and I am sure it will be everything that you say it is.

passing 600 miles on mine and its getting better with every mile

I think you will find that Harley had to bring some production of parts back into the US as otherwise they couldnot sell it at a US motorcycle, because so many of the parts were made in the far east.

To be honest I dont think that new BMW's are any worse than new Harleys, or for that matter new anything else, problem is that everything is being built to a price.
The issue is that they both cant justify there extra cost on the "quality issue" any more, neither are any better built than the equilivent yamaha or honda how harley and bm manage to get people to pay over £20,000 for their top models is beyond me

Over the last 25yrs I must have had in excess of 25 BMW's and a fair few of them have been boxers, not sure how many miles I've done on them but it's been a lot.

Hand on heart I can say that I have never had a major problem with any of them, never been stranded or had to call a recovery service.

As for corrosion the only issues I've experienced were on a couple of 80's bikes and on an 05 1150 gsa se. the rest have been spot on.

Despite some minor niggles my current WC/LC is without doubt the finest BMW I've ever owned, build quality looks good to me but I'm sure that time will tell.

Maybe I'm easily pleased, but I'm sure my wife would disagree :thumb

Good to hear !:beerjug:

I think the quality of just about all bikes seems to have slipt even Honda! Some of each range are worse than others, perhaps down to which country they are made?

My LC is no worse than any of the other BMW's I have owned. Apart from the gearbox it's a great bike in my opinion!
