I'm building myself a new PC... because my current one is now 5-years old, its a bit slow now, the nights are setting in, so it's a bit of a winter project etc. etc. Insert any further excuses you can think of ... I just fancy doing it :JB

My question is... should I use an SSD for my boot drive?
With Windows 7, I can get away with a 30GB one and then install all my apps and data on a conventional HDD... or, get a larger one, say 64GB, and install my most commonly used apps on it as well?
If any of you have already done this, or are thinking of it, I'd appreciate your feedback and comments/thoughts :thumb

not done it, but i think i'd put my apps on the SSD too, to get the most benefit.

I had one in my work laptop before I had to hand it back in. Definately recommend it ( for all apps, not just the OS ). Very fast, silent, light, no heat, less likely to fail etc etc, but it's really the jump up in speed that was the big sell for me. I'm going to put one in my Macbook as soon as the prices come down out of the stratpshere!

Pluck

For a desktop machine I would say no, its not worth the money, in a laptop maybe if you can justify the cost. As for performance yes they can be fast but they can also be dog slow in the real world. Seek times are all very well and good but impact little in day to day life what does is raw transfer rate and some SSD drives fail miserably in this. Not all drives are like this but the cheaper ones just don't live up to expectations.

That's why I was asking the question... on paper they look great, but in the real world?
Might just save myself some dosh and get a RAID setup instead :thumb
