Trackers. Yes or No???

I had a similar experience with the insurance as it made little difference to my premium and the insurance itself was only another £40. Couple this with them ringing me a couple of times to say my bike had moved, one of which was in the early hours when both times it was locked in the garage and chained to my ground anchor was a reason not to renew after my 1st "free" year. I guess if I left it unattended in public places a lot then I'd have a rethink but I don't so the risk of getting mine stolen is relatively low so I've disconnected mine now the subscription has lapsed.

I have the Datatool tracker thingy on my 1250GS - it came with the bike when I bought it 18 months ago. If the bike is moved without the key fob being present you get a text and phone call. I have triggered it accidentally myself so I know it works. Being able to see the location of the bike gives peace of mind when it is unattended too. I will renew.

Same experience with my 900xr, the tracker just sits in the background without draining the battery and I have triggered it accidentally by pulling the bike out of the garage without the keys in my pocket.

A friend's bike got stolen with no tracker and was missing for 3 weeks before a dog walker found it propped against a tree, it could have been stripped and sold off online way faster than that, even a cheap Monimoto tracker would have had that found in a day.

I am buying a 1250 GSA with a Datatool tracker fitted. I Live in Hampshire and sometimes ride into London for work where I always park in an underground secure garage. Is it worth me paying the £109 a year for Scorpion to track my new toy or is it simply not worth the money?

I suppose like a crash helmet, the one time you need it and it works for you its paid for itself!

Monimoto.

Doesn't flatten your bike battery, £36 per year for the sim card and that's it.

The original battery lasted two years on mine and it sends a message to my phone every day to say it's alive and happy.

OP says the tracker is already fitted to the bike. He's just asking if it is worth to do the subscription: yes it is.

Re: monimoto. I have one, happy with it. Yes, the (original) battery is going for its second year.

Was thinking about tracker, or trying one or two apple air tags hidden on the bike. Nowhere near as secure, but cheap and better than nothing.

the bike already has the Datatool tracker fitted so not looking at alternatives. Just curious as to people thoughts on bothering with the subscription. I think I will give it a go at least for the first year. I must be old as it didnt reduce my insurance.

Interesting to note whether or not the police deal with none professionally motinored 'trackers' the same

Air tags fuck my life!! You will be looking it yourself

My 2019 GSA also came with a Datatool tracker, it was a pain in the arse as it kept triggering nuisance location alarms even when safely tucked away in my garage. Datatool fitted me a brand new replacement unit for free and its been fine ever since, worth the £109 I paid IMO.

I am entirely sold on my Stealth tracker. For £100 that piece of mind is a no brainer.

I also travel with work and take my bike most places so it's often overnight in a hotel car park. Usually chained to a lampost or barrier when I can but for those occasions when I can't that tracker really puts my mind at ease.

The other thing I personally really like is it gives me the battery voltage. So if I am away from home for a few days and the trickle charger is not to hand them I know if my battery voltage is starting to drop and I need to take it for a quick spin to give it a top up.

No insurance benefits for me plus a draining battery, so I physically removed the thing and the bike's much better for it.

Is there a link or YouTube etc that shows howto do this? I want to stop mine continually draining the battery ——- I don’t have the subscription. Happy enough to just remove the datatool’s fuse but not sure where this is located?
Cheers

My 2021 R1250GS came with a Datatool Scorpion tracker when I bought it at 14 months old. I insured it prior to picking it up telling the insurance company that it had one thinking I’ll get a good discount.
After getting it home I enquired about activating it and was a little bothered by the cost, I then noticed how quickly the battery was loosing charge, constantly receiving a charge from the Optimate 4 Canbus charger. After reading a lot of posts about this I decided to remove mine. The frequency of charging on the Optimate slowed considerably. About a week later I thought I’d better tell the insurance company and pay the extra, I figured it couldn’t be anywhere near as much as the subscription cost. After putting it through again it came back as no change to the premium, so much for getting a discount.
David64 - Happy to show you, do it for you or PM you how, not sure it’s a good idea to say on here.

Or get a Bike Trac, no issues with battery draining and can be fitted in the same spot as the factory alarm

i have one of those, i flipped it from the tiger to the GSA when i traded the tiger, only downside the supplying dealer refused to fit despite it being simple so went to a BMW dealer who did who is listed on biketrac's web site

they only wanted to fit the datatool/bmw one

After seeing how flimsily the authorised dealer fitted it to my previous bike, I fitted it to my new bike where BMW fit the Datatool (before they were fitting them as std), alongside the factory fit alarm.

Vines told me there wasn't space to have both, but they were wrong.

Bike Trac said they'd be happy to confirm (if needed) that the tracker had been performing as expected. If someone cuts the wires the internal battery lasts for weeks - it was still transmitting a signal (although a weak one) after more than 7 weeks from being disconnected from my previous bike

Here it is this morning, in my garage - showing less than 3 mtrs from its physical location.

i find it very accurate, mine shows either where it is or next door which is good - route history is always intertsing and i find their customer service good and always patient when i've moved the thing to wash and forgot to go service mode

i have another one in different bike that shows the location based on the nearest mast on gsm - which is a couple of milles away, but i've seen vidoes of them finding stuff with RF so not too worried
