Got my GS1200 today, had a brilliant day on great roads, Hawes, Leyburn, Masham, Thirsk and the sun was shining :) I love the GS, such great fun.

Went home, chained the bike up with more security chains than Hannibal Lecter and whilst doing the front one up could smell something really bad and then loads of smoke and then there was pain. You've guessed it, my jacket touched the downpipe leaving a huge hole in the arm of my Hein Gericke £350 jacket :(

Chained my other bikes up thousands of times before but they have full fairings and downpipes well tucked away. Such a stupid mistake...a lesson learnt but the hard way.

Still it didn't put that much of a downer on the day as I am still grinning :thumb2

So would you guys know the best way in getting molten Hein Gericke jackets off downpipes? :nenau

Thanks

I'd claim for the jacket of my home insurance and use Gunk degreaser on the downpipes.

Glad it didn't spoil the GS :thumb2

Use it as an excuse to buy some Remus downpipes....

Hah. I did exactly the same thing with my HG overtrousers (and still have the melty bit on my left knee).

In the end I started the bike, got the downpipes good and hot, and just used an old wettened handkerchief to blot off the molten bits. Yes, there's lots of steam, and you'll probably get scorchmarks on the hanky, but it worked just fine for me.

Could probably use a wooden scraper too, if the exhaust is hot enough. To make sure it is, you'll need to touch it with your waterproof trousers ;)

Is your exhaust the chrome, or non-chrome version?

Mate got a windblown carrier bag on his exhaust link pipe once. Smelled awful for ages, but eventually burnt off.

hi format

I have the chrome exhaust and finally got the thick off tonight using a green washing up pad and plenty of elbow grease.

At least now when the pipes discolour you will not be able to tell there was anything there.

Thanks for the tips :thumb2

A burining smell as you're locking it up after a ride is usually a sign of the gearbox seal leaking.

Glad to know there's sometimes another cause :comfort
