Hi, I have managed to get a ticket to the value of £900 from American airlines to any destination in America due to a cancelled trip to the US. I fancy hiring a GS and riding across the Atacama desert and visiting Machu Piccu. Other than that my plans are very open. I have only ever ridden to North Africa and all of Europe in the past and always left the paperwork to a willing friend. I am taking this trip alone in August September time. Does any one have any tips for me regarding visas, best way to get a bike and is it ok to pick it up in one country and leave it in another. My travel agent that I normally use has never been asked these questions before. They think I am mad?

Thanks in anticipation.

This is the most comprehensive info on rental in South America

http://www.rental-motorcycle.com/samerica/samerica_rental.html

I have only hired in Chile and it was not possible to take the bike cross border.

The reasons seem to be.

Different bikes in different countries

BMW in Chile and Argentina

Jap bikes in Peru and Bolivia

However crossing from Chile to Peru is easy by taxi.

In Arica go to the communal taxi rank and join the queue.
They will do everything to get you across arriving in Tacna
Then hire new bike there to continue trip

You will find it much easier

Cheers Karlp.

Flights are now booked. One night in Rio then fly to Santiago and pick up GSA head North dump bike in Arica and blag it from there.
Got 18 days to do it then from Lima to two nights 5 Star in New York to relax.
My only companion is a Paddington Bear my wife has bought me to take on holiday to Deepest darkest Peru.

Looking forward to the solitude!

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for bike rental Jimmy,

Thanks

How to spend a $100 a day!

I went from Chile to Argentina to Bolivia to Peru and back to Chile on a rented F800GS from Compass - my mate was on an f650 from moto -ventura(?) 2 years ago.

No matter where you rent in the world it will cost at least $100 a day

Try these

www.motoaventura.cl

It is run by Sonia who speaks English and is very helpful. We used them two years ago and then you could take their bikes through Chile, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uraguay.

Happy travels

Hi Brian, for 8 days it cost me £2200 but that included a £600 addition to drop the bike off in Arica after picking it up in Santiago and £95 to allow me to take the bike to Argentina.
I went with Motoventura in Santiago and it was well worth it. As Stu says run by Sonia who was excellent, even sorting out a hotel for me when I couldn't find one with vacancies in Arica.

Would use again, as they say in eBay land.
