Senility creeping in methinks, I was sure I'd responded to this thread but it appears not! Please put me down as exceedingly interested, with Losttheplot I'm trying to suss out a longer trip & this could well be a part of it if I can get the time off.

Are you any nearer to identifying shipping dates Chris?

This definitely hasn't died but have been sorting my upcoming trip out. I'll be away until beginning of October then will be all over it:thumb2

Chris,
To go there and not do the Atacama would be a criminal offence :)

Depends on the length of the trip and where the focus is.

I gave been to Chile seven times both North and South.

San Pedro de Atacama. - over rated and expensive hotels (if you can call them hotels).

Geysers - worth seeing but have to get there by 06:30 latest otherwise a waste of time. Nearest civilised town is Calama - 60km night riding along potholed desert roads.

Valley of Meteorites - worth seeing.
Valley of the Moon - again worth seeing.

Atacama is a good 2000 kms from Santiago.

More interesting south of Santiago

Hi Chris, this looks to be a great trip. Pl add me to the mailing list & put me down for the short list.
Thanks. Nick

Right, now I'm back from the Pacific North West trip, I'm getting on this. Stand by for updates in a wee while:thumb2

I've been thinking about this a similar trip for a while. I'd be grateful to be added to the "interested" list for this.

OK everyone, I've managed to get the container sorted. It's taken a while as we've been making sure the customs procedures are do-able and we won't get any hassles. We've got green lights all round so this trip is definitely on.

The container will be delivered in to a warehouse in Beunos Aires, Argentina where we will get it unloaded and reloaded for the return trip. We will load it in Pershore, Worcs as per my normal US trips and you will be able to put all your riding kit etc with the bikes. The container will be fully insured and I will do all the packing/loading both ends and obviously all the paperwork. Any help will be gratefully received!!

I've looked at the route I'd certainley like to do and basically it will be heading West across to Santiago, North up to Peru (Machu Pichu, Atacama etc) skirting along the Andes then back via Paraquay and Uruguay. I reckon the trip will approx 8000km all in.

Ideally, the trip would for all of January 2016 which would mean we could take in a little bit of the Dakar. They haven't released dates as yet but it should coincide nicely.

Unlike my US trips where I sort out all the routing, motels etc, this is not going to be possible in South America, certainly not on this trip, so I envisage it will be a mix of camping and hotels depending on where we are. I will sort a loose, basic route out so we have at least something to work at.

Also, a few people want to go South to Tierra del Fuego which is great so I imagine that we will have 2 or maybe 3 smallish groups which will be ideal as it's going to be very difficult for one large group to get about. Also, a few have just said they want to do their won trip and just use the container there and back which is spot on and no problem. As soon as I have enough people confirmed on the trip, we'll have an initial get together and go through the whole thing top to bottom.

I can get 15 loaded GS's in a 40ft container and so far, I've had around 50 positive enquiries for the trip. I will try and contact everyone over the next few days but if you are definitely interested, please send me an email on [email protected] so I can start a list of who'd definite, possible etc. Please note that I will be asking for a refundable deposit to book your place. I do this on all my trips and it just means that we are all fully committed to the trip.

Meanwhile, I better get back to learning Spanish.......:thumby:

Chris,

We are seriously interested in this if space permitted in the container. Would like to see what the coatings are so that we know how much to save up.

Cheers,

Phil

I will still have to pay for my bus travel for another few months after the planned dates so can I be included in the possible list please?
And we can all decide what coatings to wear nearer the time.
email sent.
