He can update his v6 with a v7 UPDATE DVD or download a previous Mapsource version from http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/msource/

thanks for the response m8....so if I understand you garmin will send him an update cd, if he asks.
or
the website quoted will enable him to update to v7 from v6 by downloading it from there???

cheers
russ

Not that I have it but it might be worth clarifying if it's City Navigator or City Select v7 he's looking for? ISTR that both were available in v7.

If he wants a City Navigator Europe 2009 (DVD) update he will have to pay if not already entitled

Garmin will only supply updates and current mapping. If you want "old" mapping they suggest you visit the website quoted

The website will provide a full download of v7 (but see the caveats in Bumpkin's last post) to which he can apply his existing unlock code

If he has a Quest he may find it struggles with CNE2009. Although the tile sizes have reduced from v8 there are tons more data in each tile. This means that available waypoint/viapoint/route memory rapidly fills up to max - this does not appear to affect the mapping memory however. I have no idea if this affects 2610's etc

There seems to be regular confusion over the various mapping products and the Mapsource application.

The closest analogy I can think of right now is that Mapsource is Microsoft Word and the mapping products are big Word documents (that cost money). Mapsource on it's own is useless without one or more of the separate mapping products, be it City Navigator, City Select, Blue Chart, Topo or mapping from a third party. Unlike Word, Mapsource itself is free, it's the mapping you pay for. I very much doubt if you will be able to download the mapping from the URL provided. You might be able to find it on a torrent somewhere and as you have a legit unlock code it's probably a little less illegal to get it from there than if you didn't...

Once you've installed your mapping, which will also install the then current version of Mapsource (i.e. quite old for v7 products), you should then be able to perform an update of Mapsource that will bring that up to date. You might not want the very latest version and that's where the Index of /perry comes in.

the point at issue is the gps he bought (2610) came with a cd/dvd of mapsource that says v6 on the box ie cnv6. he has unlock code bought from garmin by previous owner for cnv7, but has no cd/dvd for this. he tells me he has an unlock code for v6.....so, its not the unit software he needs to upload/obtain,its the mapping software (the word doc as in analogy above!)

he is going ahead with installing "v6" disk, and unlock the maps that comes with, but is pissed off that the seller has not supplied (cannot supply!)the disc for v7 , which was in the sale detail on ebay.....he's stuffed I think, unless some kind soul has an old disc they can lend him, as originally requested:D

Russ,

I may be able to help you out here.

I have City Navigator Mapsource Version 7 which I had with my StreetPilot 111. I have been trying to sell the lot in FS/W section.

The version I have came on 3 discs so I am assuming it's CD and not DVD.

Does that help you in any way.??

this may be the answer...if I can borrow the copy.....
I dont see any copyright issues here, really, as the cds were handed out for free, as they wont work without the unlock code, which my pal has!
have pmd my addy...

Yep, I understood that part, my post was directed at Kritou rather than yourself. All I was saying was that the mapping and Mapsource itself are separate items. Granted, an install onto your PC of a Garmin mapping product will include a copy of Mapsource. However, the downloads from Index of /perry are Mapsource updates and do not include any mapping.

BTW, if it turns out it's City Select v7 that you m8 has the unlock code for; I've discovered that I have an update set of disks kicking around that I have no use for. Though you seem to indicate in your post that it's City Navigator that he has the unlock code for. I think that v7 mapping is around 2004/2005 ish so there may well be a few changes, especially as the lead time on the mapping varies across the map, some changes to the road systems don't make it into the mapping for a year or two. The included POI data is usually even further behind than that.

Really depends on what use he's going to put it to, just recreational riding then he'll be fine with the odd anomaly. You even occasionally get those with current mapping anyway.

I never really trust the Garmin POI data anyway and tend to find third party POIs elsewhere or make up my own using Google and Google Maps to research and then create the specific set I need in Mapsource.

Hope he gets up and running soon.

Russ.

All packed up and waiting to send. G/F will post tomorrow.

P.S. Just read some of other replies and thought I should mention that I have version 8 & 9 also in my possession.
If all goes well with what is on it's way to you then I can send further updates to you. Altho, thinking again (mustn't do that,) if he neeed updates he will need and unlock code.

I know where I am coming from.

Garmin will only sell unlock codes for current mapping. Having said that it appears that gpsonaPan knows where he's coming from ;)

Russ,

I honestly can't understand why you are having trouble with the disc.

Okay.I looked on the original as in
My Computer
Drive D,,, Right Click
Choose Explore.
Saw "Set up" under Medium (as in Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, Gigantic.)
Next to ISSCript9.
Also under Large is instmsia and instimiw and Navigator City Navigator Europe V7.

I can't remember which of these "buttons" is needed to click to install.

I have done another copy of the disc and original and copy are the same.

Try that suggestion to see what is happening.

Hope it works out.

Pat:type

P.S. I have looked on the other discs and at the back of the insert of V8 it says you must have a previous veriion before you install. Not 100& sure if that was the same as for V7.
