My F650gs is currently "hospitalised" at SPC for surging, stalling problem (a known fault of the bike apparently and not my rubbish riding/gear changing! ). :D

I bought the bike back in October and had a few teething problems which they sorted out straight away. Again I phoned them up with this new problem and they just told me to bring her in and they would look at her - no arguing, no bitching, they are just dealing with it.

I found them really helpful and although they can be a little "distracted" at times, I think overall that they are really good.

Honeybun,
It's just a software update - mine had it and has been fine since.
You should have it back real soon.

SPC-maybe not so good

Phoned SPC"yeah,no problem, couldnt find anything wrong, but cleaned up the connections & its all ok now.Come & pick it up".Went to spc, fought thru the open day crowds & picked up the keys...Great!

10 mins down the road my bike cut out.Back to the shop & spoke to the service manager"Ill get the technician out to talk to you"Explained the symptoms to him AGAIN"you do know the bikes restricted dont you?"Yes of course I know its restricted.I asked you to restrict it when I bought it from you,and anyway how would that make it stall 10 minutes after you told me it was 100% fine??

Strangely the technician couldnt answer that question!!,but then again I am only a girl, and I only ride 35 miles a day all year round so how would I know how my bike rides.

Honeybun,
Every standard 650 GS or Dakar I've ridden has done what you describe-unexpected stalling @ junctions, traffic lights. So it must be to do with fuelling/mixture via the injectors.
The only ones that run right have an aftermarket exhaust like a Staintune/Remus like Paul W's or Casey's and they run fine.
Take it straight, tell them to sort it out and don't pick it up until it's right, demand a loan bike until they know what they're talking about, because up to now.............it seems they're a little short of solutions

Maybe helpful

All the 650 GS's at the BMW off road school run a higher tickover - i.e. 1500 revs which obviously cures any stalling problems.

I also adjusted my GS Adventure to do the same as it kept stalling in the same way - not a pure solution but it works!

Re: SPC, they do tend to follow the 'do nothing first time around and see if that foxes them' approach to 'fixing' faults. I had exactly the same problem with my GS, described the fault in detail, absolutely no difference when I picked it up - too late for them to do anything that day so second day out to get it done properly, this time it took a week and was in fairness solved but still very frustrating - there is definitely an element of the 'customers are idiots' school of bike dealership present on occasions.

In other respects I think they are prettty good...;)

Check is doesn't need the software update.

Mines a 2000 model, but had it done early on as it was experiencing those problems.

It ticks over at around 1500 and NEVER stalls unexpected at junctions or traffic lights.

Naturally, that doesn't include the times it does stall when I'm riding like a complete twat of course........................:D

FYI I had a F650GS and lived through the early software, which didn't help but wasn't responsible for the stalling. I was told by someone who sounded like he knew what he was talking about that there is a decompression valve to reduce compression at tickover. When the bike's not run in enough this doesn't work as well as required. My stalling disappeared at around 6,000 miles as it became run in.
