Do I need to register a unit before before I can check for mapping updates? Or can this unit not accept updates beyond V7.....

I think you have to register the unit before you can check for updates.
I think your only chance of a free update will be one step up the ladder.
I think your unit will accept CN2008 (non NT) if you pay for it, or otherwise acquire an unlock code and a disc.

Policy on this might well have changed since; but I went from City Select v6 directly to City Navigator v8 as a free upgrade.
I purchased a used Quest on eBay and discovered that the CDs had never been out of their case. I registered a myGarmin account for the device and applied for the free upgrade to the then current mapping. As far as Garmin were concerned I was the 1st owner of a unit that had sat on the shelf for a few years. The previous owner had never bothered to register, it was an unexpected bonus.
