Picked up a Quest 2 despite reports re: how slow they are at drawing the maps (due to the NT so I understand...). Well there's slow and there's S-L-O-W... I mean long periods of just blank screen before it tries to redraw the map 'etch-a-sketch' style...

Any tricks in the trade to speed things up (download software patches, less mapping tiles loaded etc.) I guess I can load less detailed maps across which may help things...??

Otherwise its a fleabay job (from whence it came) and a move for a 60Csx. Or are these just as bad..?

Ta...

I've heard about the slowness of quest 2 - the quest 1, however is much quicker. You only load the maps you want...great little unit :thumb2

Delete everything you don't need. Routes, Waypoints, Favourites, Recently Found Places, Track Logs etc etc. My Quest gets slow if it's clogged up with such things.

Quest 2 is just a very poor unit. Depending on where you bought it you may be able to get your money back or fleabay it if you bought it privately.

sell the 2 and get a quest great unit, already been said.
I have an etrex as well which runs NT maps as does the 60 Csx I believe

The Quest 2 uses NT mapping as you say, this needs un compressing on the fly which, no doubt, adds to the processing burden. You could try running it with non NT mapping (no longer updated since 2009) which isn't compressed. However, due to the invisible primary mapping partition you'll have quite a job replacing the primary mapping (see link below). Try loading some into the secondary mapping space using 'send to device' in Mapsource, turn off the NT mapping and the non NT on using the menus and see if it runs better. Load only a few local tiles into the secondary mapping space rather than trying to fill it.

If the above succeeds the you could try replacing the primary NT mapping with non NT using the technique I used on my StreetPilot 2720 to replace the primary US mapping with the European equivalent.

You won't be able to get all of Europe on but certainly a useful proportion. BTW; Don't blame me if you turn your Quest into a paperweight....

Or you could just flog it on eBay and move on :)

Cheers guys. Opted for the Quest 1 (by chance one for sale on the forum) and have listed the Quest 2 on fleabay. Only way to go me thinks...

Just don't expect to ever upgrade the maps as Garmin have discontinued them for the Quest.... I got this today.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

With regards to your email, I?m sorry to hear off the issues you have been experiencing trying to update your maps.

The reason for this is because the mapping update for your GPS unit has been discontinued at the start of 2010.

As technology moves on products become discontinued and the time has come where the mapping your product uses has been discontinued.
Unfortunately there is no way around this other than looking into purchasing a new device. Our new products are more technologically advanced and have more features than your current device.

To take a look at our new range of products please click on the following link:

They didn't offer me 2009 maps.....

Perhaps, but they don't do what I want them to do and they are designed for idiots who don't care how they get to where they are going. I do, and none of the new "advanced" units let me choose the type of road I want to take.

Anyone at Garmin listening? Get your act together and offer a faster, updated "Quest 3". Anything larger is no good on a mountain bike! :)
