My speedo stopped working on the way home from a 3 day road trip. After searching on here....established that the cable or speedo drive was at fault..

This morning I investigated.......

Result.

Speedo cable has snapped at the bottom section, looks like the constant wear has killed it...bike only has 18k on it:confused:

I have order the cable today from BMW, will be here wednesday (part is in Istanbul)

Would a step by step change help the font of wisdom?

This site helped me establish problem as speedo drive still spins freely.

Not an 1150 breaking down or parts failing....................I thought they are the paragon of GS Reliability:augie

MY dream is shattered:tears:tears:tears:tears

mine broke too

after 84501 miles, I was obviously disgusted at such poor reliability. Anyroad its a piece of p*** to replace.
1) remove screen, 2 screws each side
2) remove grey plasticky screen thing 2 screws
All is revealed
3) remove 2 nuts with 10mm AF spanner
4) remove allen bolt
5) speedo pulls out of its housing
remove cable and put a new one in
15 mins including making cup of coffee
hodge:thumb

we need a sticky - Please respond if you've had a 1100GS/1150GS/GSA Speedo cable failure :rob

and for balance plus the chance to post smug replies that makes this site such a joy.

Please respond if you've NOT had a 1100GS/1150GS/GSA Speedo cable failure

Despite all my efforts,my speedo cable stubbornly remains in one piece,
Should i feel excluded and am i in need of councilling:tears

You'll find out what happens when your 1200 speedo stops working. And it won't be just a £10 cable you'll be replacing.
And you won't be able to ride it to get it fixed = back of a lorry job :D Oh how we ( old technology bikes owners) laughed.

LOL....................never had one go on a 1100/1150 type BMW, so never suffered the inconvenience

As for a 1200....................I wait in anticipation (not!)

In a nutshell, one of the maintenance tasks even I've successfully performed without Mr Magoo's involvement ;)

R1100GS.....speedometer cable failed at 74K km closely followed by the headlamp bulb! 27K km later I'm nervously anticipating the next fault, probably the gearchange rubber which is worn on one side.
Would I buy anoher BMW? Not with this level of unreliability!

Well even with that appalling reliability, I still want an 1100 - I must be mad

I can't contain my curiosity any longer... why does a speedo failure/speedo cable failure on a 1200 mean its a roadside rescue jobbie?

I anticipate a very silly reason
