I am having intermittent speedo problems on my 1200GS. The needle occasionally gets stuck between certain speeds but when the ignition is switched off the problem usually, but not always, rectifies the problem. Has anyone else had this problem ? Any ideas on how to solve the problem or is it a case of a new speedo......???

I am not 100% about this one but if you have the brake pressed when you start the bike, something in the computer plays up. Something to do with testing the brake circuit.

The result is that the speedo stays at zero.

This is resolved by turning the ignition off and allowing the computer to run its full start up procedure (as long as you are not using either brake).

I ususally turn the ignition on as I am pulling on my gloves. The 10 second warm up time is then over and I fire her up.

Hope this helps

Could be small bits of metal filings on the speed sensor in the bevel box, interfering with the sensor pick up.
How old is the bike, if over 2 years it'll be due for a oil change in the bevel box

Thanks for the info but this doesn't seem to remedy the problem ! Off to the dealer.....

Brilliant. How are you supposed to do a hill start then? Don't they have hills in Germany?

Easy...

If you are on a hill then presumably you parked in first.

So you turn the igntion on so the computer runs through its startup then use he brake. Then start the engine.

If thats the case, the speedo is the last of your worries.
