Me being the nice guy that I am... Was down in the Leeds Hein Gericke having a scout around, as you do, trying to find something to spend my brass on. Got speaking to Roger, the manager, who has a 1150 GS.

Blah, blah blah and he says he's having trouble with his bike. So, says I, go straight to the UKGSER site and there many a kind so9ul there that'll help out with problem, send piccies, instructions etc.

But says Roger, "I dont have a computer at home and I'm no good with them anyway. Looks like I'll need to get the CBR out again."

To save him from this awful dilema, I offered to post here and send him any replies to the shop where he can see them.

The problem is : 02 reg 1150, I think with about 20k on the clock. He refuelled yesterday and the bike has developed a pronounced splutter, running rough. We went outside for him to show me (he can do this- he's the manager). The bike was running rough, would'nt clear it's throat even when warmed up. Aparently it was trying to die at lights etc and it was difficult to keep going. Roger said it was running better than in the morning but it still was rough. I noticed that there was like an electrical double click coming from under the right hand side of the tank, this was like every second or third combustion. I thought maybe ignition ?? We pulled the right hand side panel off and there is a slight kink in one of the fuel pipes but not enough to stop fuel flow.

Any ideas out there to help out Roger (and save him from getting his CBR out). I will pass them on. Thanks a lot fro both of us. :thumb

He hasn't changed the battery / had the tank off recently has he?

If so a check of the throttle balance cable seating might be a good idea

I have an 02 and know exactly what the problem is - your right HT Lead has failed.

The snap you hear is the elec grounding onto the cylinder head. Take the plastic cover off and you'll probably see it zap across.

Mine failed at Christmas just after the bad fuel. No idea how the two are related but they appear to be. :nenau

Thanks for your reply but I did ask him about having had the tank off recently and the answer was "No". Throttle cable looked to be seated okay.

Thanks very much Snoopy. I'll post this link onto Roger. Does the lead need to be replaced ? Is there a link to a page where he can see some piccies of what to do ? He's loathe to put it into the dealer and be charged an arm and leg for a simple repair that he could carry out himself. Many thanks on behalf of Roger. :thumb

Two minute job, seat off, unbolt tank, shift tank back and replace lead.

£24 or £28 quid from the dealer. Dealer ordered for next day.

Make sure it is the lead by:

1. taking the plastic cover off, listen or/and watch for the spark around the HT lead. It might ground inside the cylinder head which case you'll hear but not see it.
2. swap them either side and zap will transfer as well.

My entire lead failed - it would ground all over the lead by going through the insulation - even though the insulation was in perfect condition. :nenau

WELL DONE THAT MAN !!

Thanks very much. Turns out that the problem that you identified was spot on - it was arcing on the RHS. Bodged up with some tape as a temp repair and a new one will be ordered from the dealer. Roger says many thanks ( I have just spoken to him on the phone). Excellent site this is !! :thumb :thumb :thumb :clap :clap

WELL DONE THAT MAN !! (II)

Just had same problem with my bike today after changing battery.Bike was lurching then dying in traffic.Midway through a manoeuvre she would either dart forward or wipe her feet and think about it.

Thanks to you folks, have found problem to be throttle cable not sitting right.Bike back to normal now Thank God.
