come on all you techies!!
how do you wire a starcom1 to gs1200.
i know where to mount unit and cable runs etc. but am not sure which two cables to tap into.:(

Dont do it!!!!

Power direct from battery or auxilary fusebox.

Not recommended to tap into canbus.

I tapped straight into the back of the auxiliary socket and it works fine.

i know i am being a bit thick , but is it obvious which wire , what colour etc or is there only one wire?
do i need to disconnect battery prior to making my connection?:help

HP

The Starcom1 unit has two wires, one positive and one negative and a fuse holder that should ideally go on the +ve wire.

If you plumb in to the auxiliary socket as I did you can remove the connector at the rear of the socket by sqeezing the sides. One of the socket wires is more red than the other and I used this as +ve.

My bikes a couple of miles down the road so I can't check coloutrs/take photos etc.

I also used the connectors that were supplied with the Starcom1 unit. They cut through the socket supply/return wire insulation and make a connection to the wire inside. I don't like the idea but I used it anyway and it works.

I sealed everything with insulating tape for good measure too.

The use of the auxiliary socket supply means that you are not confusing the CANBUS system and the Starcom1 unit isn't left powered up all the time.

I don't have a 12 but have they finally set it up so that the auxillary socket isn't live all the time like it is on my 1100?

Yep, it switches off after 15 s when the ignition is turned off. It's also meant to cut out at 5amp but will actually allow more current than that to be drawn.

thanks for that . my garage is a bit cold to spend too long in,connecting and disconnecting. :beerjug:

Starcom on 1150 Gs

Just recieved my Starcom. Does it have to be wired to a switched supply? It doesn't really make it clear in the manual.

I don't mind, but I never know how to find a switched supply., and it 's easier to just wire straight to the battery.

If Starcom wired like this will it always drawer power? There's a reference in the manual that I think suggests that it's only switched on when the headset is plugged in?

Anyone know?

Thanks

Will

Wire it straight to the battery.

The unit does not switch on untill you plug a head set into it.

This means if you are sat on the bike with a headset plugged in you can comunicate regardless of the ignition being on but as soon as you unplug and leave the bike it's switched off and no battery drain.

thanks

Brill!

Just what I hoped.

Thanks Ian

Will be in touch to arrange collection of Can.

Re you wanting to fit Starcom to 1200.

A)Take out tool Roll
B) Make ply tray to fit over recess leaving the small area below (you can keep wee bits in there)
C) Cover ply plate with thin sponge and use exsisting pull over tye to hold Starcom
B) Wire straight onto battery (within-line fuse as supplied)
Works a treat

where do you put your tool kit??
after all what is more important, talking to the wife or repairing broken bike?:D

starcom installation

OK I get the point, if you have panniers stick it in there. I you want I can send you a template of the plate it only takes a few minutes to make.

no.............not worried about template.
i would be happier if something of this thread could get back to bmw. toolbox not big enough to carry tools , then if you wish to fit any other extra......forget it..........or fill panniers........not forgetting they are already full of wifes clothes:(

Pictures would be nice....my Starcom is being delivered today and I'm interested in setting it up under the seat of the R12GS.

Thanks

Eventually, I got the Starcom installed but only after a big "Thanks" to Philspace and Steverino from Advrider for sharing their install experiences and photographs. Sorry for stealing some of your ideas.

I liked the Blue Sea fuse block so off we headed to the local Marine supply store and $34 later, I got myself a fuse block. This will come in handy for future gadget installs. :thumb

The only issue was where to install it; under the tail was no good as 1) that is where the alarm is resident therefore no available room for the block and 2) getting to the tail is a right pain in the arse and it would be everytime a fuse needs replaced.

Pic of underneath the seat showing the measley toolkit and the Scorpio perimeter sensor (on the top of the battery).

Soooo, since the R12GS tool kit is just a bag o'shite, out it came and in went the fuse block...Tra Laaa

I was gonna install the Starcom permanently on the bike (under the seat?) but after reading Phil's and Steve's advice, I opted to buy a tank bag and reside the unit in there (for easy access, fine tuning etc, etc). The problem now was how to connect the Starcom to the battery?

The easiest way to do that was to cut the power cable (ensure it's not connected to the battery before attempting this) and insert a splash-proof connector between the fuse block and the Starcom. Tie-wrap the female end to the bike just under the seat and...... :beerjug:

the male end stays with the Starcom unit...

Plug in when it's time to ride then disconnect when at home, making it difficult to drain the battery

I still needed a tank bag but I can't stand the looks of the bigger bags, me thinks they get in the way.

After searching around, HowlingMad suggested a Cortech Super Mini from New Enough may be able to solve my "big bag" issue.

He even posted a pic of the mini on his R12GS...that was enough to convince me....Thank You Sir.

So...the Cortech arrived and I found it to be ideal for my needs. I could fit the Starcom, my Ipod, cell phone, wallet, house keys and that bag o'shite of a tool kit. If I need more stored during a ride, I'll get a pair of Jesse's

The unit runs great. Mrs Scotsman is loving it...although it was strange at first to have her voice echoing around my helmet...I cannae get away from her (but then again I don't want to :love )

On to the next project...Rocky Meyer saddles, me thinks. PUI Saturday
