So I ordered my R1300GS last week and delivery was meant to be around the end of the month.

Had a call today to say it’s been handed over to the transport firm to ship to the UK but once it hits the UK it needs a recall done by BMW UK for the “starter motor relay”.

It’s likely to be mid December now for delivery for me.

So the legendary BMW quality is falling apart already.

Taking mine in to Brighton Saturday morning for the recall, not that I have had any problems starting the bike.

I was supposed to be picking mine up Tuesday. Salesman says the relay is on its way, but can’t give a date.

Mine was a stock bike, happened to have the options I wanted, just needed registering. I physically saw it, but can’t have it. Annoying as we have a great forecast for the weekend and was going to get her run in, but I’m big enough and old enough to survive.

Mine got checked yesterday and will need to be replaced, the only reason they are being replaced is minor damage to one edge of the plastic casing, they showed me a picture of it and have ordered one in specific to the bike and will fit it during the 600 mile service 👋

I really liked the 1300 but found it too small . I was looking forward to trying the GSA version but my interest has evaporated. Can’t believe BMW are doing their usual - issuing a recall before the bikes reach the fucking dealers .
One day , just one day they’ll finish a bike first .
That’ll learn them for being lazy and not redesigning the switch gear to incorporate back lighting and not simply repurpose a switch that had previously caused issues on the 1250.
How to take the shine off new bike day - order a £20+k wankenpanzer to be told you can’t collect it because we fucked yo yet again .
Cue posts from the loyal muppets praising the BMW warranty and “at least they’re admitting the problem “ blah blah blah.

And as if by magic

Yes , but as usual BM will fix it as their customer service is second to none and other manufacturers should take note and also try to be as good .

Don't forget I'm a riding God as well as a Muppet ... :D

Of course .
Anyway I’d always wondered what the R stood for in R1300GS.

I’ve just recalled with it is

Further to this thread, as I posted on the 600 mile service thread, my starter relay burnt out yesterday and potentially nearly set fire to the whole bike.

Got home from the dealer after having the tracker fitted which included an extra wiring loom extension and the first service. While they did it I mentioned the battery charging and starting issues I'd been having. They were lovely to be fair and ran a barrage of tests, load tests, drop tests and even put the battery on their big charger pack to make sure it was fully charged before I went home.

I was told at point of sale that the bike needed the starter relay recall and this would be done by BMW UK on entry into the country, which I assumed had been done, at least had been done correctly anyway.

Rode home, let the bike stand for 2 hours to cool off while I did some work. Went out, rinsed it all off as best I could with the fading light, blow dried it and then started it. All sounded normal and nothing untoward. Went in the house briefly for a drink, came out and heard a high pitched whine. But it sounded like it was someones hoover off in the distance but then I noticed smoke coming from behind the LHS plastic cover (just above the shift lever on the frame).

Turned the bike off immediately and as I did the starter motor started to pulse and turn the engine over constantly, mad flap while I got the seats off and got a screw driver to disconnect the negative terminal.

Dealer is picking it up late today so hopefully I'll have an idea on what the damage is, but out of curiosity I removed the cover and found the starter relay burnt out and the black stuff they seal the board in with had melted everywhere......

Jesus H Christ, this takes Beta testing to a new level. The potential implications of the thing burning your (and other new 1300 owners') houses down doesn't bear thinking about.

Hopefully it'll get sorted switfly, I just hope it doesn't turn into a big saga. Although the dealer was messing with the electrics and battery yesterday the fact it's the starter relay thats burnt out and thats the exact thing there is a recall for sees very suspicious so hopefully BMW UK will just sort it and I'll be back on the road. The dealer were fantastic yesterday, the tech when he had finished my bike spent ages talking to me about what he'd done and generally just having a natter.

I've had 6 GS's since 2005 - all great bikes but think I'll pass on this one for a year or two.

A year or 2 , well good health to you .
Sit back and watch . Some of us decide to take a chance . Life is too short and you will become awkward and Arsey god help you 😂😂😂I’m on my 7th now and enjoying every moment even with an affair with the Red side
