Further to this thread, as I posted on the 600 mile service thread, my starter relay burnt out yesterday and potentially nearly set fire to the whole bike.
Got home from the dealer after having the tracker fitted which included an extra wiring loom extension and the first service. While they did it I mentioned the battery charging and starting issues I'd been having. They were lovely to be fair and ran a barrage of tests, load tests, drop tests and even put the battery on their big charger pack to make sure it was fully charged before I went home.
I was told at point of sale that the bike needed the starter relay recall and this would be done by BMW UK on entry into the country, which I assumed had been done, at least had been done correctly anyway.
Rode home, let the bike stand for 2 hours to cool off while I did some work. Went out, rinsed it all off as best I could with the fading light, blow dried it and then started it. All sounded normal and nothing untoward. Went in the house briefly for a drink, came out and heard a high pitched whine. But it sounded like it was someones hoover off in the distance but then I noticed smoke coming from behind the LHS plastic cover (just above the shift lever on the frame).
Turned the bike off immediately and as I did the starter motor started to pulse and turn the engine over constantly, mad flap while I got the seats off and got a screw driver to disconnect the negative terminal.
Dealer is picking it up late today so hopefully I'll have an idea on what the damage is, but out of curiosity I removed the cover and found the starter relay burnt out and the black stuff they seal the board in with had melted everywhere......
