Starter problems anyone ??

Can anybody tell me why please
My 2010 GS occasionally won't start . Could it be a stuck starter motor as once it is pushed, or rolled down a hill for a jump start, it seems to free itself and will start on the button . Or is it electrical ? Would appreciate any suggestions for at present its just annoying but off to France next weekend and would like to get sorted before I go.

If it is a stuck starter motor you don't need to push it any distance, put it in gear and rock it back and fore (quite hard).

I would put more money on the push to start button. Wind the button round a few times if it happens again (like yer winding a watch). Sometimes the contact under the button gets a bit woolly .. :thumb2
 
Thank you for both your suggestions. Had contemplated fitting a better battery.
Will try the button suggestion first, if that doesn't work can look at battery.

rocking the bike backwards and forwards wont make any difference,its a preengaged starter motor the same thats fitted on all cars these days,in days of old when we had inertia starters rocking the car back and forth worked well to free a sticky starter ,so dont waste your energy,as said a new battery is the first line of fire,or moisture in the switch,even if it is a starter at fault there is plenty recondioners that would strip and clean the internals of your starter motor.:thumb
 
I have had this a few times on my 2011 GS.
Mine is usually caused by parking in gear, turning ignition on, clutch in, sidestand up, press button, nothing, cycle ignition, press button, starts fine.
Think mine gets a little confused with the safety inputs it gets from sidestand switch, cluthc switch etc.

I don't think its the battery. A battery doesn't work one minute then not the next - and then gets fixed by a push and a jolt that 'frees itself'.

It could be the battery terminals though - check that they're tight, and squirt a bit of contact cleaner under the push to start button. :thumb2
 
if you know what your doing, bench test your starter or do it whilst still connected to your bike,ONLY if you know what you are doing.:eek:
 
Possibly a bad set of switchgear electrical contacts in the starter button.
