Hi,
I have a 2008 GS, recently it will only start with a large hand full of rev's, The dealer had it for a week trying to diagnose the fault and have replaced the fuel pump, which appeared to solve the problem.
Got the bike back on Friday and tried to start it this morning and no joy, it wont start on the button.
Has anyone any ideas that I can put to the dealer tomorrow morning?

Ta for your help in advance.

Hi.

Is the starter engaging? Is it turning but not firing up? Is it left on a trickle charger? Sure you have fuel?

Assuming the dealer didn't dislodge anything else maybe they thrashed the battery while testing it before replacing the pumped an a day or night sub-zero has had its effect.

Either way sounds like a trip back to the dealer.

My 08 is the same.
Must be loads of power in the battery as the starter motor will work for ages.
Only way to get the bike to fire when it is cold is to hold the starter down & give it a few revs. (This is even with the bike kept in the garage !)

this is still not right though:confused: any modern fuel injected bike should start on the button and not need any throttle.
back to dealers methinks.

Mine ('57 plate) is like this when cold (she's stored outside though). Slight throttle as the starter button is pressed does the trick ... just release the throttle immediately she starts.

never had the issue on a ride though ... only when starting out from home.i

Hi,
Its not always plugged in to the optimate, They did check the battery and it was fine.
Its kept in the garageand will only not start when its cold.

my 08 gsa, when cold needs just a whiff of throttle or it wont go

My r1200Rt is the same in really cold weather. Giving a little throttle is actually recommended in the handbook.

There was a 1200RT on a very damp morning in France, in October. It wouldn't start. I wandered over, twisted the throttle back to the stop, hit the starter button, whir, whir, small quick cough, bang......thumper...thumper....thumper....thumper.......all was well.

In this cold weather you need to change the oil to castol 10/40, 20/50 is to thick for cold weather

I got my 1200 out of the sea container on Thursday, it had 20W50 in it and had stood for a couple of months whilst in international transport. Both the bike and the weather were freezing. I reconnected the battery (Odyssey) and gave her a go. She fired up after a few revs and sounded like a real bag of nails (worst I've ever heard her).

When revving over idle I could have sworn the big ends had no lube, she was clattering and knocking until the camchain tensioners took up the slack and even then she ran noisily at anything but idle. It seemed to take an age before I could raise the revs above idle without an almighty din, but it was probably a minute of running before she smoothed out at anything over idle as the oil warmed.:eek As she got warmer she ran beautifully again, so no damage done.

Gonna get me a jug of 10W50 semi-synth from Hein Gericke (should be good all year-round) and do an oil change, like Easysushi says this cold weather obviously ain't good for a bike with 20W50.

Returned the bike to the dealers this morning (Lind of Norwich) who assured me it should start on the button. Very impressed with there helpfulness and they even gave me there GS demo as a loaner.

After 4/5 weeks of trying to sort it, Lind Motorrad in Norwich sorted out a new bike from BMW.
Yesterday I picked up a new full spec GS only difference was the colour.
