Evening All
Ms Hay Ewe has a 310GS and has developed a difficulty.
Had it about a year, 2nd hand but in great condition. Rides well, looks good, no problems.
did put 10liters of fresh fuel in it.
Has been parked up for 5 weeks but started fine and ran well, for about 5miles / 8km.
I was riding it and getting along at about 80km/hr 48mph when it cut out. No lights on the dash, nothing from the Engine.

I pulled over, and did a restart, started up as normal, ran for about 10 seconds and then cut out.
mmm, odd, did it again and that is all it does.

Starts, runs for about 10 to 12 seconds and then dies.
When it runs, its fine, normal, sounds normal, revs ok, just not for very long!

Based on this, I think it is a fuel situation, because it starts, runs, sounds normal, feels normal.
Just consistently, only runs for about 10 secounds.

I opened the tank filler cap, wondering if there was a blocked breather causing a vacuum in the tank, no change, still only runs for 10 to 12 seconds.

It seems that the ignition circuit is fine, key on, fuel pump primes, then it starts.
I think that there is no signal to the fuel pump after that, and so the fuel pump is not pumping and the engine is only running on the fuel from the priming action.

I have good experience with BMW's, I have an 1150GS, 1100GS, and 1100S and have quite a deep understanding of them, not much yet.
I don't yet have much experience with this model except basic maintenance servicing.

Hoping for some clues and guidance as to where to look.

Thanks

Sounds like a fueling problem.

Maybe the pump. You can pressure test it with the right gear. Or remove it and test it with a 12v source.

Linked to the above , if you can find where the fuel pipe enters the throttle body , could you remove the pipe , insert a t connector to allow both fuel to continue to the throttle body but also to be safely diverted using a longer length of hose to check fuel flow continuity. Since it strikes me if you don’t have the engine running beyond 10 secs the ecu will shut of fuel automatically?

This 310 engine is a Bajaj engine , does it share a GS911 diagnostic port with the other bikes in the range. Do you have a Bmw or Jtm dealer who could scan it ?

Last roll of the dice is does this bike have an evaporation/ overfill arrangement on it. These daft emissions devices check there are no releases to air then stop the engine. If this is present look around the air filter which would be wet

I had similar symptoms and ended up being recovered to the dealer. All they told me about the repair was that it was an electrical short (linked to the ignition) under the tank. I can't recall what wiring runs along there but perhaps worth checking in case there's some chaffing.

Thank you all.
I expect to be able to get into it o Friday.
Will update as and when i find anything

had something like this on an Aprilia sxv , i think it was a tip-over sensor that was faulty ?

would let the bike run for 10-15 secs , then stop. turn off , turn on same 10-15 secs.

tip over sensor
when the bike exceeds a certain angle , it is deemed to have crashed or fallen over , this sensor will turn the bike off if it is running .
ignition ...turn it off , turn it on.... bike will run for a short time .
BMW will have a different name for it i expect.

Quite a few folk on the Ktm 390 forum ( Bajaj engine like 310) had issues with the tilt sensor. Thats a good call 👍

Thank you, I wasnt expeting that!
Where about will I find this sensor?
What would be the solution?
Unplug and re-plug? replace sensor?

I shall look on the MaxBMW Illustrated Parts Cattledog in a bit, see what I can find, but clues would be useful, this isn't an old skool 1100 / 1150 GS!
Thank you

I would guess the sensor works by either making or breaking a curcuit. So I'd unplug it and see what happens, then short it out with a paper clip and see what that does.

(Easy for me to say when it's not my bike, and not my wiring loom)!

Evening / morning all
has taken a while, soon after I got the back home, where we were moving into, and needed to do painting and general house maintenance, I then took a new job at the other end of the country, so repack everything, eventually get it all down here, This moto in a trailer with not time to even look at it, and settle in to new job and digs.

Will soon be getting to it and following up, refreshing my memory as to where it got to!

Will look in to it and let you all know.

Sorry its been a delay, life happens.

I was able to get in to this after dinner.
Got the front / fuel tank fairing off - only a few screws!
and I could see the tank and fuel pump assy better.
I did a start and it was getting wet around the fuel pump, dripping fuel.

Tank off, drained, fuel pump and found a crack in the plastic housing.
Will likely need a replacement fuel pump. If its stupid expensive, we have some sealant at work, but a replacement assembly will be best.

Thank you
Mmm, thats about au$100.
I got quoted au$488 for a brand new one this morning, be availble for pick up next week.
Mmmmm, will give them a call this evening and see.
Based on the mode of failure for this item, and the plastic housing, tempted to go for a new, but at a 1/4 of the price, its tempting.

New….

But then it’s not my money.

Or my bike being covered in petrol.

I've had four of these bikes ranging from a brand new one to a well used one that had done an overland African trip and I've not seen the fuel pump fail like this before . The fact that there are so many secondhand pumps for sale on line also suggests a low failure rate . I guess you pay your money and take your chances - a six month guarantee for AU$100 or a 2 year guarantee for AU$488
