I understand this is a popular problem on the earlier models in particular. Does anyone know if there is a way of determining whether the problem has been resolved on an 08 bike please?

I wouldn't say it was a ‘popular’ problem
Mine went at 75,000 miles, fitted an uprated stator and its still going nicely @ 108,000.
I fitted a Gamatronix voltage monitor led @ 60,000 and it gave me plenty warning of imminent failure

The rotor was updated to a vented version in around 2012/2013 but not aware of anything for the stator.

As others have said around 75,000 miles the stator fails. Unless you are buying a super high mileage bike, I wouldn’t worry. I hired a 120K km bike in Spain the operator said the only thing they had changed was the stator at 80K km
The fly wheel (rotor?) was updated to aid cooling for the stator.
I had mine replaced at around 70,000 miles after trying a stator rewind without success.
I never had anymore issues up until I sold the bike at 126,000 miles. The bike was an ‘09.
