Cosmetic or problem

Hi

I know the subject of corrosion has been covered many times before. But can anyone say for sure if this is cosmetic or a massive problem please.

I might buy a 2021 20k miles 1250GS but am worried by the corrosion. I am inclined to think I should buy it and ride it and not worry about it! Thanks

Corrosion on BMW motorcycle engines and axles is often caused by poor paint coating and bare aluminum or alloy surfaces, which allow moisture to penetrate and lead to deterioration.
Additionally, factors like dirt and road salt accumulation can exacerbate the corrosion process, especially in areas where protective covers trap moisture.
Nearly every Bmw bike I have seen apart from garage Queens suffer from it somewhere on the bike.

More than likely ridden in bad weather, and put away wet, into a cold damp garage/shed didn't help the factor.

The engine paint will flake off with time & use. Like on any Bike/Machine. The same as paint on any surface which is subject to road grime, debris & use.

Most is cosmetic.Not anything under the skin. Unless someone has parked their Bike in the Sea.

Check other Bmw's at other dealerships, look at the same spots to make the point whether that particular one has either been well cared for or just like many others ridden and cosmetically challenged.
Remembering that alloy does not rust, but paint can corrode, or blister, when heated.

I can see it, though can't help re a definitive answer as to whether it's just cosmetic or not.

I've got a similar bit of corrosion but much less of it (8 years and 43k miles so I can't complain). It's like something (water) has got under the paint
You could clean it up
Regular ACF helps prevent/slow this down

I had similar corrosion on all of my 4 alloy wheels on my last Bmw car, Salty water had got underneath the lacquer on the Polished rims and made them cloudy and blister, last polished rims I ever put on any future cars of mine.

Perhaps that is all that is, might ask that dealer if it's seen at a dealer, to get expert advice before you purchase.

Well that’s the thing. I was under the impression that this was very common. But the dealer seems completely clueless as to whether it can or needs to be dealt with.

A mate bought a worse one than that
Scraped and ground the affected areas back to bare metal and repaired the areas, couldn't tell after

Great starting point to agree of any reduction in dealers asking price. Knocking off £500 might help.

Its going to sound daft, but it is, and isn't corrosion

The good news is

It's oxidation of the alloy under the paint, the painted surface will continue to bubble until it eventually flakes off

The bad news is

The paint warranty is only 3 years, so nothing will be done by the dealer or oem

Going back to my original post

What is the corrosion like in other areas?
If the easy to see areas are that bad. Chances are the rest of the bike are a lot worse.

Lay on the ground and look at the barrels and cylinder heads. Particularly near where the exhaust exits.
Also check the exhaust studs and nuts.
Look at the exhaust where the catalytic converter is. Plus the downpipes.
Rear bevel box.

The bike is probably too old now for BMW to change anything under warranty as it’s out of its factory warranty.

Personally. I would walk.
Pay the extra and buy a mint example.

I have a 2021 R1250Gs with 27k on it and no corrosion issues.
