Stebel Nautilus Horn

Hmm - jet engine equivalent ... does the job! A LOUD horn is certainly needed here in 3rd world environment...

(I mounted mine the otherway round to Jimb ie with the air
compressor facing backwards, after first removing the main bracket to which the OEM horn 'bar' is attached. This allowed the
air comp to butt into the space within the steering yoke - a single hole was then drilled in the frame near reg plate for the single locating bolt. Anyway whatever works for you.)

I have one of these compressors mounted where the OEM 'horn' lived, but it drives a pair of conventional trumpets - one on each engine bar.

REALLY loud.

The downsides are that pedestrians think that it's a car hooting them. Also I've had to fit a nasty plastic shroud (35mm film can) over the button because my tank bag operates the horn on full left lock.

Upside is that maniacs on country lanes think that a car is coming round the corner

Abroad,I hardly ever need to use my horn,but in pigging Britain,it probably gets as much use as my clutch lever,due to the "great" British motorist (a by-product of the money spinning "teach `em to pass a test,and not to drive" industry).As for "horn",I should have said "horns",as I have twin Fiamm airhorns on both my 1100s.The compressor is a snug fit in the hollow headstock,and the trumpets are side by side under the beak.A jolly good chortle is had at MOT time when the "audible warning device" is tested; usually in a confined space,ho ho ho..."Laugh?I nearly bought a round!!"

I've just bought this horn and didn't get any cable or fuse with it. Is this standard, or should I have got a more complete kit?

Horn comes with 30A relay, no cable or fuse.

I fitted mine last weekend, Great bit of kit had the dopey idiot in the cage who pulled out on me in a fit, it really woke him up, piece of p*ss to fit & it's great for my daily commute through London,. 10 out of 10 great value at £23 delivered

TM Magnum 80

Has anyone seen or tried the Magnum 80 horn by Stebel, looks like a direct fit for the oe horn and only draws 6 amp.
Would this mean no extra wiring in? (no relay)
It states it's 136 db any views.

Well i just got side swiped by a van today on the M56 whilst taking the bike into Williams..

I saw him about to pull over and hit the horn.. the standard GS horn is really nafff. despite having my thumb full down the git still came across and i just clipped the back of the van,, almost pitched me off..

So its a defenite Horn upgrade time..
At £25.. looks a reasonable price... motorworld you say.. right off down there shortly.

Local dealer is naff

my local motor world have only got a "ring" horn in.. not any Stebels.

Will have to see if they can order one in for me.

The magnum looks like it will do what i want.

These horns really are the answer on the GS - the loudest and most economic spacewise. I used the relay and also upped the standard horn fuse to a 15A.

Finally managed to locate a Nautilus...looks good. I have no problems with mounting the horn, but the electrics are more of a problem! I was going to use the relay supplied and the existing horn wiring, will this be ok? I know that it is suggested that the fuse is uprated, but looking at the manual I can't see a dedicated horn fuse in the diagram. Is it necessary to have a seperate connection direct to the battery and if so is it just a case of fitting an in inline fuse?

Any help greatfully accepted.

Use the existing horn switch only to switch the relay, the stock horn draws 4.5 Amp, the Nautilus draws 19 Amps hence the 30 A relay the connections are pin 30 supply voltage in 2.5mm cable with a 25A fuse straight to the battery, pin 87 +12 Volt switched load to horn + in 2.5 mm cable, pin 86 Ground negative in 1.5mm cable, pin 85 switched + from existing horn switch in 1.5mm cable.

These are standard relay numbers, use the existing ground from the horn switch for pin 86 and run a separate ground to the horn in 2.5 mm cable.

test the relay before you connect the horn you should hear and feel the realy click when you press the switch, the horn switch will merely operate the relay coil which is milliamps, about one tenth the current draw of the original horn, the relay then supplies up to 30a of current from the battery without using the bike wiring.

Put your ear plugs in when you test it.

Blinking Flip!

Fitted my Nautilus today. It is quite a neat installation but have to endorse what has been said here aleady about the bracket you mount it with. It needs to be quite substantial to prevent the unit vibrating and wobbling about like a very wobbly thing.

I used the standard bracket as a template after first bending it to the best shape. Once I was happy that the unit was in the best place, I used the OE bracket as a guide to shaping the steel plate I eventually used.

The best bit is that later I was on an urban dual-carriageway in lane three with a Range Rover in lane two just ahead of me. I saw the driver look in his mirror and knew that I was in his blind spot. Sure enough he started to move out. I gave him a quick blast. Honestly you should have seen how quickly he changed his mind!

I actually felt sorry for him. I'm sure he thought he'd wandered onto a railway line or something. He was still trying to work out where the racket came from as I passed him. I'm sure he couldn't believe it had come from a bike!

If I never use it again it was worth the 23 squids!

can you be a bit more enlightening on the brackets for this baby? Maybe a little drawing with dimensions, wiring info etc. As the song goes "Words ..... don't come easy... to me!"

The instructions are on the box and quite easy to follow once you work out what fitting you want.

I opted for the replacement of the OE horn. This allows you to use the standard horn button.

Not sure if all 11** GS models are the same but the only thing I had to work out is whether my 2004 Adv had a "hot" button or not. It has! What this seems to mean (I'm no electrician of any description) is that the horn button is permanently live and pressing the button earths it and completes the circuit.

I was surprised to find that my OE horn mounting was in fact three thin bits of steel plate.

I took one and bent it into this shape that allowed the Nautilus to fit to the original mounting point and clear the front shock without fouling the fork legs on full lock.

I then took a bit of 1/4" thick steel, cut it to length, bent it in a vice to match the thin steel OE mounting bracket as above, drilled the appropriate holes and painted it.

Two fixings, one a nut and washer on the OE horn mounting stud under the headstock and one nut and bolt that comes with the horn kit to secure it to the bracket.

It really is quite simple. I had never taken off the tank before and this took me longer than the above. I took the tank right off because I had never done it before and also to route the wiring as neatly as possible.

I found that I couldn't use some of the same mountings used by others for the relay because I have ABS and BMW alarm that fills some of the available space. Even so it is easy to find a secure position for the bits.

Cant get one here in Ireland. The stebel importer wont bring them in. Do any of you know of a shop that takes credit cards and could post a horn to me please. All help would be appreciated.
