I should change this
Is it much of a job?
Will I need any special tools?

Can be a pain in the arse. Have you got access to a welder of some kind?

Hi
If is a 1988 GS I would be very careful using this procedure. Mine is a 1989 R100 GS and I have the BMW manual. This manual is for the R80GS and R100GS only. This gives the steering head bearing torque as a maximum of 0.5Nm.
The method given in the link is for a different design of steering head assembly and uses much higher torques.

Hi Steve, I have a Haynes and a Clymer manual. You don't fancy scanning the relevant pages and emailing them to me do you?
Quick question - does the taper on the adjuster nut face upwards or downwards?

Anyone?
It's not clear in the manual.![]()

Stripped two R100RT steering heads this afternoon, both had the rounded side of the castellated nut facing downwards.

)I can imagine the domed face being on the load side to avoid any burrs on the castellation causing mis-tightening / uneven pressure / later loosening / blah blah blah.
In other words, to ensure the tightening face is flat.
Maybe not opposite,
rounded side = domed side
facing downward = load side,
nein ?
