Day 1

Leave early (5am) to get onto most direct route to the Black Forest via Tunnel and French autoroutes. Arrived in Forbach late afternoon.

Day 2

Arrived warm & sunny. We jumped on one of my favourite roads, the D500, which snakes south from Baden-Baden to the Swiss border.

On route we stopped at the Worlds biggest cuckoo clock...:mmmm

PIC5.jpg

I waited nearly half an hour for this bugger to make an appearance.

PIC6.jpg

When he did it was all over in about 5 seconds :nenau

PIC7.jpg

However being back on the road some cheered me up. :)

We stopped for lunch near Titisee.

PIC8.jpg

Beautiful countryside and great smooth (and quiet) roads.

We arrived at Andermatt and stayed at the Hotel Badus. This location being ideal as a jumping off point for many of the best passes.

Day 3

Major thunderstorm during the night but now blue sky's, so after a quick discussion over breakfast, we decided to head east over the Oberalppass and towards Davos.

PIC11.jpg

Life is good!!

PIC12.jpg

PIC13.jpg

From Davos we headed south east towards the Stelvio. In other words we followed in the footsteps of Clarkson, Hamster and Captain Slow. :thumb2

Weather went from cloudy to sunny again but remained very humid. Stayed dry which was good.

PIC17.jpg

PIC18.jpg

Decided to leave the Stelvio until the next day.

Overnighting in Mustair instead, just as well, as within an hour of arrival the heavens opened up.

PIC19.jpg

PIC20.jpg

This hotel was biker friendly... but you may go to bed famished :eek

PIC21.jpg

Here's the evidence... 20 swiss francs to sir!!

PIC23.jpg

This guy looked better fed than me. :(

PIC22.jpg

Day 4

I was looking forward to this, as last year we had attempted to get to the Stelvio but had to turn back due to sleet and snow on the Julierpass. I took my revenge on the previous nights lack of nutrition, at breakfast, by stuffing my camera bag (minus camera) with loads of rolls, eggs, cheese and ham etc.

Mustair and the mountains looked cloudy as we set off. On the northern ascent the road turned to gravel and visability was very poor. But as we got higher things began to improve...

PIC24.jpg

PIC25.jpg

We only had the occasional cyclist for company.

PIC26.jpg

PIC27.jpg

Once at the top of the pass we decided to have coffee here.

PIC29.jpg

This meant that I could cheat on the altitude recorded. :D

PIC28.jpg

Will do some more later. :)

I'm jealous!

Cracking phots Tricky!

I've yet to do the Stelvio. Perhaps next year!

The ride down (which heads east) on the 50 bend walled pass was fantastic.

It was early afternoon now and lots of bikes were heading up. One guy dropped his 1200LT just on the apex of a bend after we passed him. Luckily, he was ok and so was his pillion with only a few scratches to his bike.

We were now in Italy but this part (called Sud Tirol) was very Germanic.

I think Sud Tirol only became part of Italy after WW1. During the 1930's when Hitler was travelling to meet Mussolini at the Benner Pass the German speaking population turned out 'on masse' to greet him.

However, not wishing to embarrass II Duce, Adolf kept the shutters down on the windows of his railway carriage. :ronno

It had been a fine days riding and we had been so lucky with the weather.

That night we found a small guest house near Merano with nice views from the balcony. :thumb2

PIC36.jpg

A well earned beer. :beerjug:

PIC37.jpg

We went for a little wonder around and decided it was time to indulge in a little live music.

PIC38.jpg

These boys were 'on tour' and playing in the joint next door.

PIC39.jpg

The boys done good!! :clap

PIC40.jpg

Day 5

We decided to head north into Austria (proper) via the Timmelsjoch pass.

No nice views on the way up due to low cloud and mist. Near the top the mist became a bit like fog with visibility down to a few yards in places. :eek

PIC41.jpg

PIC42.jpg

To be continued... ;)

Stelvio

Thanks for the file you posted for me :clap:clap Top man

Heading down from the summit the mist/fog thankfully lifted.

(Cue a 'phew' smilie :thumb)

'Three go mad' in Sud Tirol :D

PIC44.jpg

The GS just looks on nonchalantly ;)

PIC66-1.jpg

Österreich ahead.

PIC45.jpg

PIC46.jpg

We followed the twisty 186 which cuts across the Tirol and headed for Garmisch-Partenkirchen of BMV Motorrad Days fame.

No problems getting a room in this place.

PIC47.jpg

'All Quiet On The Event Site Front'. ;)

PIC48.jpg

Nice and cosy back at the room. :augie

PIC49.jpg

Decent view 'in' the window. :green gri

PIC50.jpg

Day 6

Unfortunately it was now time to head for home. :(

Weather in the Black Forest was rain with more rain so we legged it up the autobahn to Baden-Baden.

PIC51.jpg

So good they named it twice. :D

PIC52.jpg

Day 7

We had arranged to stay in Vianden (Luxembourg) on the last night and duly arrived in good time and as usual with anywhere near the Ardenne...where greeted to lots of rain.

Vianden.

PIC56.jpg

Hotel courtyard.

PIC53.jpg

Hotel.

PIC54.jpg

Rain.

PIC55.jpg

I retired to my room to read about the original Old Lady Grand-Duché of Luxembourg, who in 1914 on the arrival of the Kaisers army, stood up in her carriage waving her stick at them and telling them to 'clear off back home'.

She sounds like my sort of woman. :thumb

Day 8

To cheer myself up, I thought rather than head straight for Calais, a visit to Bastogne would be more interesting. :thumb2

Bastogne was the scene of part of the famous 'Battle of the Bulge' from December 1944.

PIC57.jpg

Impressive monument to the American fallen.

PIC58.jpg

The visitors centre was very interesting and well worth a visit if your in the area. :)

PIC59.jpg

PIC60.jpg

PIC61.jpg

PIC62.jpg

The road to Calais was very windy and on arrival we were not supprised to here that our boat had been delayed by storm-force winds in the Channel.

This baby had even stayed in port. :eek

PIC63.jpg

Come back blue sky... :tears

PIC64.jpg

Thanks for looking and to those who have left comments.
