A white BMW R1200 GSA reg number LB15 KVO was pinched from a bike bay in Kentish Town between 4.30pm and 5.45pm today. It's a dealer's courtesy bike (mine is being serviced), so instead of curling up into a ball and sobbing, I'm merely feeling sick to pit of my stomach (the excess is £1000). I know it's probably already being broken up, but if you see it, call the rozzers, please.

Thanks.

No doubt the wheels and bits will be on ebay shortly the sellers are usually are european brothers, I wonder what the dealer thinks when this happens !

I guess the £1000 is more than the excess you would have had - if it had been your own bike which was lifted?

On the bright side - it doesn't affect your own NCD.

They have CCTV everywhere these days, you'd think they could have a peek and see what happened as it must have been loaded into a van, although that was probably stolen as well.

Do you guys use disc locks or chains or any other form of additional security if you leave your bike somewhere ?

Ouch. Sad to say but I would never, ever park my GSA on the street in London. As it's such a popular bike thieves are stealing to order or for it to be broken up for parts. There's no security to prevent someone having a bike if they want it but at least a mandatory factory-fitted tracker might help instead of the laughable master security system trumpeted by bike manufacturers.

My mates bike was stolen last night from his garden. He'd only passed his test and bought it 3 weeks ago. It had a bloody huge Oxford lock on it too, which they sliced straight through. He's understandably gutted.

I leave mine in Leeds city centre every day and must admit a feeling of relief every day when I come around the corner and see it's still there!

I'd question the £1000 excess....

Not unusual around here, unless waiver offered and paid Last time I was tempted to a test on a Honda it was mend it or a grand whichever was less, should it get chucked down the road !

I am doing, as I was told the excess was £250 when I picked up the bike - only to be told the theft excess is higher for theft when I reported it stolen.

The annoying thing is I have a tracker on my bike, as well as a disc lock, and an Almax at home. The courtesy bike comes with nothing.

That was supposed to be a reply to Wreford Miles. Guh.

The £250 excess that you probably signed for and the £1000 they now tell you about are worlds appart !

Check the small print

Pretty upsetting . I think the Met police closed their "bike theft " team.
Given the thefts, even if you don't lose your own bike, you'll "pay" by way of increased premiums.

My thinking on the excess is.....

If you damage their bike you have to pay the first £1000

But in this instance someone else stole their bike....

Just a thought... Are you by any chance from the eastern regions of Europe :D

Well the bizarre thing is, if I'd been a dick and wrapped the bike around a tree and written it off, the excess would be £250. But it's £1000 if someone chucks it into the back of a van, dismantles it, and puts the parts on eBay.

It should all be on camera (there's a council one pointing at the bay), but I'll be surprise if it's even checked. And the dealer isn't interested in following it up. It's all a bit depressing.

Contact the police officer in charge of the case (their details will be on the form you get with the incident number when you reported the theft) point out the CCTV coverage and ask if it has been checked . Most council, public body systems will be on a recorded loop and kept for 7 to 28 days before being deleted .

Just as an aside when I take out a loan bike I ALWAYS carry my own lock in case I have to leave it parked up

London Bike Theft

After years of parking bikes in London without a problem (Alarmed and locked) I has a GSA Stolen (West London) a couple of years ago. They then tried to steal the replacement. Sold the GSA and bought a K1600 thinking that would be far too big and less common. Phone goes off at 2.00am (forgot to mute it!) and it had taken them under 2 mins to take the bike...which had a large U lock on.
Fortunately the bike was also fitted with a Road Angel tracker so sat on my laptop with the police watching my bike move through North London while they directed cars into the area. Got the bike back, with just a few scratches when they had put it in a van on its side. Huge relief ....
The Police simply said that if it wasn't locked to a Lamp post (Not a Street sign as the Wnkrs would cut that down) a bike bay secure hoop, or a Tree then, its at risk. U locks take seconds to break so I am told. I now use an Almax bike chain if the bike is left on the streets...and of course the tracker..but make sure its one that YOU can track on a PC/Laptop.
