STOLEN GSA1250 PUTNEY HL19 CFP

Thanks Matthew
I will look into it when I get the next bike, who searches out the bike when it’s stolen? Is it the Police

There's no 24/7 monitoring centre with the Monimoto like you get with a subscription service which is why it's only £150. It's powered by 2 batteries inside the unit so is easy to fit providing you can find somewhere to put it. If your bike goes missing you get an automated call from Monimoto and it shows the bike's position on an app on your phone. It's then up to you to contact plod and give them he details of where it is etc.

sorry to hijack the thread slightly, and very sorry to hear of yet another bike theft.

I apologise in advance if my following comment offends anyone.

I also looked at Monimoto, and thought it looked like a great product, but I had my reservations about a tracking device managed by a company based in Vilnius ....I suppose it would make it easier for them to track the bike from theft back to the dismantlers ....in Lithuania.

Sensible comment about the steering lock but many insurers insist you use it when parked

How the feck are they going to dispute it wasn't locked if the bike is never seen again.
Even if it's recovered i've yet to see any assessors check the steering lock to see if it was applied.

I’d agree, but only pointing out the wording in some policies along with the fact I was asked that question when my bike was nicked. Steering locks are very easy to overcome and the subsequent damage to the frame can result in a write off with the frame damage, depending on the value of the bike

Hi Joe,
You dont need to use the company themselves for a contract. I just use a giff gaff sim card and stick £20 on it. So long as it gets activated once every 3 months ( check this) the sim remains active.
Monimoto unit is ok, so i would not be without mine.

I suppose you could say it’s more poacher turned gamekeeper, rather than being used as a tool to get bikes/cars to Lithuania.
A bit like hackers being employed by Kaspersky, or reformed burglars setting up home security firms. They know their way around! In that sense, they are probably very good at what they do!

Very sorry to read this shit that your pride and joy has been stolen .... I hope in some form or another you get the bike back. Horrible fckurs.

Well good luck with getting the police out to retrieve your pride and joy if it is stolen and your tracker survives long enough to tell your where it is. I know of cases where the police refused to attend, as is often the case for other thefts and house break-ins. And if the police can't help, then good luck with taking the law into your own hands against a gang of hardened criminals!

I went with BikeTrac simply because they have credibility and an existing relationship with the police, though even they have now had to employ a private security firm to try to monitor stolen bike locations until the police belatedly turn out. They and similar firms also have a proven retrieval record. I think this is one area where DIY solutions are not the answer.

I would still like to drop the thief’s into an acid bath, it’s so sad when you talk to the Police and they tell you that many of these bike thief’s don’t care and they have no fear of authority

Really sorry to hear the sad news, gutted for you.

Unfortunately you have to think differently in built up areas

If i was leaving my bike unattended anywhere not in a garage etc but parked on the street, I would have used 2 disc locks on the front and one on the rear as a minimum and if within 50 miles of London i would have also secured the centre stand to the back wheel via a chain or use Cymarcs stand solution.

Overkill, or not realistic but it is what i would do. in fact no i would have brought (previously done this while working in Birmingham for 4 months) a £1500 run about and kept my GS for other uses.

We live in a world where in some cities theft is an everyday occurrence.

After having mine stolen and the extra insurance I now have to pay, I'm happy to pay the relatively small subscription needed for the BikeTrac monitoring.

The fact that it's smaller than most means it's easier to hide than some - not that there are too many places to secrete one on an LC

Sorry to hear about your bike theft.

May be if the manufacturers were to make the steering locks out of hardened steel, would that not stop them being broken, by yanking on the handle bars? Surely this is one thing that the manufacturers could introduce at minimal cost!

I have a phone interview with the insurance company tomorrow afternoon and I already know that I am going to be smashed up, I have done my homework and found three other 1250s with the same spec and mileage. I have to pay the first £600 so I am already down. This will be my last new bike, its not worth the grieve and worry I am going to buy a shit old commuter

I had until August last year a well used 57 plate GS. Bog standard, owned for last 5 years, used all year through winter 60 miles a day commuting to work. I personally valued it at about 2k, insured it at that value and as I was pretty sure no one would dream of nicking it for ANY reason it lived outdoors on my drive.

It was taken by joy riders who rode it up and down a disused railway track until it ran out of gas, then smashed it up and chucked it down an embankment.
'They' will nick anything.

Insurer disagreed with my valuation ( I was completely frank about its condition and value when interviewed ) because without warning I got a cheque in the post for £3600, and that was after they had taken the £400 excess.

If I didn't have a garage I wouldn't have replaced it.
Good luck.

Many years ago Harley used to have a lug on the frame and a lug on the steering stem, you used a padlock to secure the two.
Far stronger than the flimsy steering lock used by other manufactures.

Not sure if Harley still use that method on their bikes.

Might be worth investing in the centre stand lock that our resident GS accessories supplier Cymarc do: https://www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk/m...ng-lug-modification--refurbishment-1105-p.asp

Not only do you get your stand refurbished and powder coated, but the locking lug added to it allows you to lock the centre stand in the up position. This provides a further obstacle to the scrotes wheeling the bike away, and is probably in a more awkward position to remove with a grinder than a disk lock, though obviously nothing can be totally immune to that.

An ideal project to do while we are all off the road for the foreseeable future due to the current restrictions!

If the shits have a grinder with them I wonder how long it would take to cut through the legs of the stand?

Good point, but hopefully it would fall over on them if they did! They would have to cut both sides while holding it up after cutting the first, so could cause quite a delay.
