Strange clutch problems on an 1150?

Hi all

I hadn't used my 1150 (Rockster) for ages. So I decided to give it a run. Straightaway I noticed that the clutch lever felt stiffer then normal and doesn't seem to spring back as smoothly or as quickly as before?

I was riding along about 75mph and opened the throttle sharply to overtake and the clutch just slipped. It slips every time you load the motor.

What has happened to make the clutch stiffer in operation and the clutch itself slip? is it likely to be new clutch and oil seal time or could it be slipping due to the stiff operation of the lever? Thoughts?

Many thanks.

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. It may be too high, if so, remove a few ml.

A failed seal shouldn't make it slip, if anything it would make the clutch engage when you had the lever pulled in.

Sound like the seal in the master cylinder.
Huh? How? :nenau
The problem is that it is not engaging properly, not the other way around.
Sounds like a shagged diaphragm spring to me. Or possibly something not moving properly on the splines. Strip down time!!

If the handlebar lever is not returning correctly then it can ONLY be something in the master cylinder or the pivot of the handlebar lever. Seals can fail and cause problems in either direction. If it's not allowing the hydraulic pressure to release back into the master cylinder then the clutch will slip.

try slave cylinder at back of gearbox, prone to leak at seal and get crapped up, can also leak down pushrod and also crap up.good luck

Thanks for all the replies. :) So there is a chance that it isn't the oil seal gone. I must admit I can't understand why that would lead to a stiffer lever action?

Am I right in thinking, theres an inspection hatch somewhere where you can see the actual clutch and if it is contaminated? Or, is there a bolt on the clutch housing you undo and if oil comes out it coinfirms the seal is knackered? I'm sure I've read something like this?

Massive inspection hatch , it's called the starter motor .

Remove it and step in and have a look ;)

When you say massive, is it big enough to send someone in with a hairdryer to dry off the oil? :D

I'll probably take that off and have a look. I used it today and the biting point has moved to about the end of the levers travel so I guess it is oil contamination. Ho-hum. :(

Its due to go in for its repairs now they have been authorised. If I can get BMWs to replace the clutch instead of replacing some of the "damaged" parts then I will, cos I'm skint. If not I'll start saving and book it in with you in the new year. :)

Or plan C; Offers invited for 2003 Rockster with slipping clutch. 15k, FSH, Remus Y piece and carbon can, Techlusion. :(
