bikes done 5.5k, when coasting in 5-6th gear at a steady 2.5 to 3000rpm and gently rolling the throttle on and off you can feel the engine grinding through the bars and pegs, very unpleasant and it sounds like a bag of spanners any ideas?:eek

Demo I tried done the same and had 5500 miles on it too. Put me off owning one just yet

there's also excessive clutch noise with the lever extended, surges forward when trying to start with the lever in and lurches forward on selecting first, so could the noise/grind be related to a shagged clutch?

They all do that too sir...
( welcome to the world of the wet clutch )

The wet clutch on my Honda XR250R doesn't do that and it snicks into gear like a good'un

No clunks or clanks:D

A finer gearbox would be harder to find and certainly far superior to the 6 speed one fitter to the 12GS WC

I can't understand how BMW could get it so very wrong

I sadly confess, that sometimes while riding I think about issues raised in the forum :D

Friday I went for a play with two work colleagues, one of whom test rode the new GS. (t'other was on a 990 adventure).

Three? four hours of good solid riding on a mixture of moss strewn B roads and fast A roads ...? My gearbox is as good as any bike I've ever had, and I have absolutely no problem getting any gear at any time, including neutral.

My 1200GS 09 model gearbox varies from rubbish to so slick depending on the weather?
I can have a good ride out on fast sweeping bends and the box is sooo slick.
Next day I can do two up ride on back lanes and every change has a clunk, with surging on the throttle at 2500 to 3000. How can a gear box so good one day be so bad the next? Its not good and after so any different bikes without this problem I cannot excuse BMW.
