Hi im a fairly new 1150 gs owner, and im finding it a joy to ride but very unusual.
Ive noticed a louder ticking from the left cylinder ,thought it was the injector at first. But it happens intermittantly, usually light throttle 25oo rpm ish.
Any ideas?

While i had the bike on the main stand checking this noise out, i noticed another strange noise as i released the throttle down to idle.
This noise seemed heavier but not excessively so,it lasted a few seconds and seemed to be from around the front casing area, then drifted away.

The bike has done 20k,is a 01 model, has been regularly serviced.

Im told these bikes are very quirky, but ive never had anything like it.
It rides well ,no horrible noises, just this slightly annoying light tick from the left hand side,at around 2500 rpm, and now this new slightly heavier one on overrun from revving.

Sorry to be a pain, but any ideas
Is it a gallon of petrol job and a match!!!

cheers
Gareth

Is it worse on start-up?
What oil do you use?.15/50 helps quieten the motor.
Have you had the nearside cam-chain tensioner mod done?.
Valve clearances/rocker end play?.

Ignore it completely, mine has lots of rattles and tapping noises, earplugs help.

strange noises

Hi
On initial start up sometimes there is a slight noise for a second or two.But then thats it.
I thought poss oil getting round/drain down etc as with most things.
The lighter noise from the left hand side is very light, making me suspect the injector, but when checking with a long screwdriver it seems no worse than the other side.
I suppose it could be the clearences/end float ,but is very light and intermittant.
The heavier noise only lasts a second or two and is as you throttle off, from revving her up.And again intermittant.
The oil was changed by a dealer in The south coast so i assume it was the right stuff.
As for the tensioner mods, god knows.
how can i tell/find out?

What oil should i go for,ill change it?

Are there any massive engine problems etc i should watch out for?
open to all your advice,if this was a L10 cummins i'd be in with a shout!!

Thanks again

Gareth, I wouldn't worry. Mine can make all sorts of weired noises and I think I would worry more if it stopped making them now :mmmm

Feed it with a good oil regularly (check the oil level frequenty) and let it warm up before thrapping it and I would say it's good for more miles than you are :D :D

Mine has 54k on it now and is fine, far noiser than Verns 200k donkey which is just about run in :clap :clap :clap

Start worrying when it goes all quiet, but seriously there not like your jap stuff they rattle and make noises even from new so dont worry unless it is obviously metal on metal banging and is getting loud.

all the best

Mark.

noises

Hi I have exactly the same problem with a ticking noise on the left side. So far I have changed the cam chain tensioner , both cam followers and push rods, stripped the engine to change the con rod shell bearings, I've adjusted the end float, valve clearances, balanced the throttles, checked tps voltage , changed the oil and it still makes the bloody ticking noise. Last weekend I did about 700 mile fully laden with luggage and a passenger and the bike rode perfect, so I think its about time I leaned to live with the strange noises BMW's make:nenau I think the saying goes ( they all do that sir)
