Strange problem accessory socket anybody else had this?

I phoned Battersea today. They say they are aware of the problem and:

- in most cases the latest software will fix it
- if not, a new controller will fix it

According to previous posts there is a software fix for it. So why not go and insist that your BMW dealer update the software and fix it!

Unless people keep complaining to BMW it will never be fixed. Just keep insisting at the dealers that they fix the problem. What is the point of supplying a power outlet which keeps switching on/off? On a 10K bike this is not acceptable.

I enquired two weeks ago and my dealer told me that a fix was due sometime in August.

You must wait till then I'm afraid.

It is almost unbelievable just how many 'software fixes' that the 1200 has had- and still we have gremilns.

Still a fantastic bike though :thumb

A number of people have made suggestions as to starting procedures to prevent this happening, but none of them worked for me.Peter

There is a foolproof way of making the problem reproduce. First navigate yourself into Central London. This will work perfectly. Now try to get home. This reproduces the problem for me every time I go into London.

However the bug rather foolishly failed to notice me ride into Cooper's Reading who were able to observe the problem as it happened. Apparently some controller board has gone or something.

Further to this...

I raised the matter with the Service Advisor in John Clark BMW when I was collecting my bike, yesterday. He said that he had no knowledge of a software upgrade in the pipeline but that there is a workaround for the problem. He said that in order to keep the accessory socket live, you need to switch on the ignition and plug in the accessory so that the CanBus recognises it. Then, switch of the ignition, switch it on again and start the engine.

So, today, I've been switching on the ignition, booting up the GPS, switching off the ignition, switching it on again and starting the engine. The result is that I've been able to navigate by GPS for the whole 230 odd miles of today's ride.

According to a thread on a german GS website (r12gs.de), a new software upgrade is available in Germany. Interestingly, while some posts report success in solving the auxiliary socket problem, others are waiting to see if there are any reports of new bugs before they get the upgrade done..... :mmmm

UK BMW Motorrad dealers were made aware of this software upgrade earlier this week and from personal experience I can say it solves the intermittent power problems through the CanBus power sockets.

Several of our customers experienced both GPS & Baehr comms systems shutting off at will and this 7 minute upgrade fixed all of them.

Form an orderly queue at your nearest BeeEm dealer......

Just thought I'd report that this works for me too. It's a pest but much better than having the GPS screen go blank after 5 minutes.

Well I took my 1200GS into my dealer on Saturday. They put it on the tester. The tester only reported the need for an ABS update. This was loaded and the mechanic performed a scan on each component to see if there were any further upgrades and apparently found none. He had the BMW software update news sheet and was following its instructions.

So why did the Tester not give my GS the download?????

I'm told that this particular fault/remedy is NOT automatically detected by the GT1 diagnosis machine.

In my case the technician plugged GT1 into the bike, which showed no system faults in the memory....this was followed by much button pushing on the GT1 resulting in the software being downloaded about 7 minutes later.

As I said before this was as a result of a technical bulletin from BMW UK which all BMW technicians have access to.......

Please can anyone who has had this software upgrade done (or someone from a dealer who monitors these forums) post up the version numbers of the software in the modules AFTER the process has completed, then I will go into my dealer and get them to read the version numbers out of mine so I can ascertain whether it has been done.

Thanks

Chris.

Sounds as though someone hasn't read the sheet properly that came with CIP 7.0 (coding individlisation programme for all you anoraks out there).
After the software check the page will display all the control units fitted to the bike in white lettering followed by the retrofit button at the bottom.
Select ZFE then programming then special measure &that will up date the software. Same for BMS which will make the bike run so much better

Does that mean there is yet another BMS update,? Is that going to change the fuel mapping yet again- BMW software seems to be more flakey than microsofts!

I now have a bit of a conundrum, as it is pretty difficult to tell your local dealer that they do not know their business.

I live near Peterborough. I was just wondering where you are, I suspect Southport, but am not certain.

If I paid you a visit I wonder how much you would charge for checking and programming the software?

Perhaps you could email me back [email protected] as I notice you are not a site sponsor.

Rgds

Just been on to my "local" dealer (Pidcocks) to get them to upgrade my software so the bike auxilary socket won't keep cutting out and they tell me they haven't had the new software yet but expect it by end of month. Very dissappointed as I'm getting very annoyed with the b2b radio and intercom cutting out. How come some dealers seem to have the software and others haven't? Or are they telling me porkies?

Booked in for 18k service next week and am hoping to have the software update to prevent the aux socket from switching off intermittently. According to the techs we asked at Garmisch (in July) this update was due to be released this month. My dealer (Cannons at Braintree) think they have got it… :nenau we shall see next week!! If not then will be a DIY solution as am p*ssed off with having to keep going through the start up procedure up to three times before the damn thing (GPS) will stay on. :(
