Strange problem accessory socket anybody else had this?

Battersea uploaded the software to my bike yesterday. I was not impressed - they had a charger plugged in and said 'but it's working'. I had to go and speak to the technician to explain the problem (again) and actually guide him through the menus (which I've never seen but used the explanation given up thread) before he understood what I wanted.

It seems so far to have worked but I wont know for sure until I've tried it for a few days.

On the plus side they agreed to give me a final drive and clutch on a sale or return basis so I can take them as spares on the two-month trip I'm about to do. If I dont use them I can return them and get a refund.

Socket power nonsense

My 12 has a TomTom Rider wired onto the back of the aux sockets. It started the Okey-Cokey 1 on 3 off socket power nonsense 2 days ago. Strange thing it has been working fine with only 2 or 3 cut outs over the last 800 miles since last service (6k). My mate’s 12 seems ok, both of our bikes are booked in for the “software fix” tomorrow at CW Dorchester. As we are riding down to the South of France on Thursday I think I’ll get a relay, fuse and some wire and prepare a hard wired option just in case.
With the aux sockets unplugged from the loom….
I intend using the tail light supply to drive the relay coil and connect the relay contacts, one side to the fuse\ battery and the other to the power sockets.
Anyone done this before?.

Be careful of the power connector on the rider cradle, all my mates with rider units have had problems with the vibration causing poor contact and the units turning on and off, not to be confused with the BMW power issue. One guy on the web also reports that he experienced arcing across the terminals which burned away the terminal on the back of his TT rider unit.

Apparently Tom Tom aren't doing anything about this, mates phoned them and got the old "Its the first we've heard of it" routine (unless of course someone here works for Tom Tom and would like to comment on this ??)

Yes my Rider has worn on the connection pins of the "charging shoe" and also pitting on the connection points on the back of the Rider itself. I have a new "shoe" which I've fitted, and with some rubber bands to hold it positively. I'm sure the Rider-"shoe" charging holder connection is good.
This lash up only has to last a week (away in France) and the whole Rider\charging shoe will be going back. TomTom have accepted the problem and have arranged to have the thing back for repair. So far TomTom have been very helpful! I'll keep you posted..

I've done it but I used the parking light rather than the tail light. Apparently the parking light isnt monitored by the electronics so it's safer to use for this sort of thing.

I have had the same problem. It seems to me that it is worse when the weather is very hot - I gave up on mine and wired directly to the battery. It also seems to me that the latest SW has made it worse. It isn't load related, and in my case it is not bad wiring - it is the CAN bus getting into a bad state. It is often cured on mine after switching the bike off, wait for the displays to go blank, then try again.

How long does it take to upgrade the software? My dealer suggests that it would take about an hour and a half.

I had asked for the software upgrade to be done while my bike was in getting the gearbox seals changed. (7 days.. 2 days labour [thank god for warranty] 5 days waiting for parts).

Just got home, fitted the GPS, started the bike, GPS starts to powers down after about 20 secs. Looks like they never had enough time to do the upgrade.

I was told that the fix for the accessory socket shut down does not require a full software upgrade and only took a few minutes on my bike. My Dealer only received the software two weeks ago

I haven't tested it yet though, I have had no time for riding this week

I took two bikes in at once and the whole process took about two hours. For some reason one bike took much longer than the other.

I had my ECU recoded this afternoon at John Clark BMW in Dundee and.......the GPS now doesn't switch off...!!!

To say that this is a huge improvement would be a serious euphemism.

Unless I'm much mistaken, there were also updates to the fuel map and to the brakes software at the same time. The bike no longer pops back into my Remus can when I roll off the throttle to change up. Also, the initial brake actuation feels a bit softer. Previously, if I really hammered the brakes, the initial application came in with quite a bang.

Schtum... I am glad that you have found this with your brakes
I reported this but few others have reported it and my dealer does not believe that the software affects the brakes.

Latest upgrade - socket still shagged

I had the latest software upgrade done on Tues 12th Sept at SPC. 1.5 hours, I could have installed XP several times over.
Used bike the next day, GPS turned off on the way home but not on the way out. Marvellous, that worked then. Same thing happened on three more trips. Went back to SPC on Sat 23rd Sept. Engineer took great delight in showing me in black and white that the latest CD had the fix. All I've got to do now is teach my GS to bloody read, as IT doesn't seem to know.

I took cup of coffee outside and restarted bike several times, failed to turn off in a couple of minutes each time, so rode off down 272 in huff. During ride stopped bike and restarted, socket then started to power on and off. Rode back to SPC, engineer encouraged to come out and see. THERE...it did it, and again...at last, someone else has seen the Emperors new clothes. He said he would phone someone on Tues (today 19th Sept and get back to me). Well as usual SPC haven't called back.

I have not enjoyed much of my last 18000 miles on this heap. It has been the most money I have ever spent on anything, bar my house, not even my previous cars. I feel let down, robbed even.

I trully believe I have purchased a Friday afternoon bike. I am praying I win the lottery one day as I have a dream of riding it to a big BMW event and beating it to death with a stick.

Wire the GPS to your battery and forget about it. You can periodically tell the dealer to work on it, but at least it will no longer bother you when using the GPS. Or, you could stay unhappy until BMW fixes it.

I cannot help but wonder two things: is it possible that the technician didn't know that this latest upgrade does not happen automatically as other updates do, but rather that one must force it? And, secondly, could there possibly be a fault within your GPS unit, or does it work ok in the car?
