Hi

R1200 gs 2007

I've an issue with the handlebar mount bolts. They are now stripped. Had a mate over with his top of the line tool box. Bit of heat, bit of hammer action, they just will not budge.

I was hoping to put on some handlebar raisers from ebay. Damn, 18 of your uk pounds delivered and they are amazing quality and just the same as the 130 pound offerings from ...

Applied heat, so expect that loctite is not the issue. Good tools, so purchase is not the issue.

We recon the bolts are the wrong size. So the the setup is now cross threaded.

Any suggestions?

My mech is up for the challenge but will helicoils be up to holding bars with or without raisers?

Other question is, does my bike have domed M8's as standard?

The weird thing is one of them was hand tight, so I/we are a bit baffled.

Any abuse/ advise very very welcome. My bars are not tight any more. Cant snug them up:nenau:nenau:nenau:nenau:nenau

As far as I'm concerned, I'm off the road until this is sorted.

I'm sure I'll get frisky and go to tesco for the craic but yeah, dent on the way, scotland is calling and the bike is not safe.

A good-quality thread insert (e.g. Timesert) in aluminium will be stronger than the original and in steel, no weaker.

Can't comment on the rest. Hope you get it sorted.

I have used a spray-can with some sort of gas that freezes the bolt or surroundings so that it crimps. Thats worth a try!

Domed head bolts won't be stock

I bet someone has fitted the wrong pitch & fucked the top yoke thread

Thanks gang. I’d seen the fiche online hence I suspected they were not standard. Bike is going off on a trailer ASAP to a workshop.

Good to hear a helicoil or similar will be strong enough. That’s the bit I was worried about the most.

+1 with JB, and only way I see them coming out now, is using a tiny dremel, and cutting across the top of the bolts to be able to get a flat headed screwdriver in there.

It’s beyond my abilities. I’m rather annoyed. Bank holiday weekend coming up too. Anyway thanks for the help lads.

Why do people fuck about fitting the wrong type of bolts, to something like a handlebar mount.....................some stupid owners out there

Yeah, I'm quite bewildered by it. Especially considering where it came from. Anyway, I'm saying no more. Hopefully my mechanic can fix it without messing up anything too much.

Some bods think all bolts are the same thread, seen it a million times, not saying our OP is responsible for his problem....;)

No not me. I've a qualification in ham fistedness. I don't do anything stupid anymore!!! Dr Farkoff can attest to my inability!!!!

The weird thing is one of them was hand tight, so I/we are a bit baffled.

So they aren't all seized in place then ? exactly how many are stuck ? .... and if one has come undone what makes you think the others are the wrong thread ? Try tightening down the loose bolt and it may take the strain off the bolt on the other side and make it easy to remove.

And they may have a non standard domed head, but that doesn't mean they're the wrong thread.

Correct. One of them was finger tight and came out no bother. No sign of any loctite on it. So it stands to reason that the bolts probably are the correct pitch?

We tried tightening down the loose one to release pressure on the other one but that didn't work. It's all most odd. One of the other bolts came out about 3 mm and just stuck fast. The other two (closest to the tank) just will not budge at all.

I've sent the seller a message to see if he can shed any light on what might have gone on but no reply as of yet.

Are the domed bolts stainless steel?

I've had this issue before when standard bolts were replaced with stainless steel bolts in aluminium, they oxidised, totally stuck, and they seized in. no fun.

If using heat it would have to be proper heat, or I would try an anti-oxidising penetrating oil first. Salt water is the usual cause and the position is prone to water sitting in the hole and soaking in.
