New switch is nice and positive in its action and a slightly darker colour red.

Hang on a minute. Are we talking crimson glory, burgundy or maybe even Chinese red...

Which is exactly what happens when you kill the engine using the kill switch / ignition switch or side stand switch or even stalling it. None of which cause any damage to the bike.

I hit the M 25 tonight on my way back from Kent and realised I had not put my ear plugs in..I pulled in to clacket lane services and for the first time in 34 years used the kill switch... Popped my ear plugs in... Hit start and away I went..... The key remained happily in situ throughout...all thanks to this post...

As the manual contains no dire warnings of damage, death or destruction from using the kill switch to stop the engine I shall continue to use my (also new and darker red) killswitch for that purpose - well, until it breaks again

Fluffmeister - pleased you got sorted so quickly, my new switch is also a darker red than the last one.

Not used a key on my Harley (except for locking it away) for years...........it ain't nothing new.

Always a bad sign when a dealer holds a non service part in stock, means that it is prone to regular failure

If you turn the bike off with the kill switch, and leave the ignition on, I can see your point, but as they then turn the ignition off, shutting down all circuits, there shouldn't be an issue.

If you turn your bike off by using the kill switch and then turn the ignition off you are taking two actions where one would do! The ignition switch will shut down all circuits in a way expected by the on board computers. The kill switch does not do the same thing, neither does the side stand switch. Both will leave certain circuits on. You have to turn that key at some point so why not just use it to stop the bike in the first place.

It looks like the switches are poor quality on these bikes, our local dealer is saying he has changed a lot of them. Hopefully the replacements are better quality. The concept of a rocker switch as kill/starter removes a whole world of fun, most of us will have cursed the bike not starting only to find we have flicked the kill switch by mistake.

Despite the best efforts of BMW assist to screw things up our guest has had a new switch fitted without drama, I hope the rest of his trip goes well.
