The thing is that if they start changing things that make bmw diffrent they will turn them to Japanise replicas which was'nt the case when we bought our bikes.
It took me 10 minutes like others to get use to it.
Now concerning the horn perhaps a little repositioning would'nt hurt.
Cheers

bmw vs others

i prefer the bmw..

teh normal push n click button is way to cheap and awkward in my opinion..

but i do admit the horn button is a bit awkward..

must have a think aboout it,.

After reading Howards post about swapping the horn and left indicator switches, and the right and cancel switches - I set about to do this on Saturday...Finbarr.

Yip doddle, swapped mine around then went out for a paly, with newley fitted handle bar muffs, so i couldnt actually see the switchgear, much better, only hit the horn once by mistsake.
Much easier to operate, and much easier to hit the horn in an emergency.

I don't see what the problem is. I can swap between my GS and my Triumph with no problems at all.

I'm in the "I don't see what the fuss is about" brigade. I could switch between BMW and conventional indicator setups without any problems (only have a BM now). I like the BMW indicators - very easy to use with heavy winter gloves on.

As far as the horn is concerned, again, no problem.

BTW - I wouldn't complain that the horn is easy to miss when you want to sound it in an emergency. If it really is so late that the incident is "emergency" status then the horn won't save you - although the brakes might!

New GS1200 Switches

Now that BM have seperated the resevoirs from the switch gear I am thinking of getting them as replacements for the Buell switch gear.

I find that once you are over the unfamilar nature then the BM switch gear is easy to use.

I now really dislike having to use the switch gear on any other bike...

When i first looked at the GS it was an 1100 and i didn't like the indicator switches, too bloomin small!

No your hands were too big

Quality system far superior than the one from the land of the rising sun.

:beerjug:

so when accelerating away from a junction/corner how do you reach up with your right thumb to cancel the indicators if your throttle hand is being wound open ?

It's a german way to make sure you don't power out of corners and highside ;)

BOLLOX!

WMB system three individual switches in two separate switch blocks :cockeye
Japs system one switch one switch block :D

it's bmw trying to reinvent the wheel. sort of dumb idea i'd expect from the french

I have to take my hand off the grip to operate the 'normal' indicator switch on my 650. I haven't got small hands.
I long for the easy, fully contolled use of the 3 switch method. Negotiating roundabouts was so much easier with both hands on the bars!

Indicator switches

Good grief !!!! 5 pages - time to close this thread i think.Get out and enjoy ur bikes. And don't say we could if we could work the indicators.....!

Get a 1200, the indicators are self cancelling:D

my suzuki did that 26 'kin years ago.

bmw really don't want to rush into anything do they?

My 3 month old Adv is my first BMW and I was slightly apprehensive about the "funny" indicators as pointed out by all the rags..... but after 1/2 hour test ride I didn't see what all the fuss was about.

The only bit that annoys me is the horn button, its in the wrong place for me and takes quite a push to press in....... and when you do the thing is that loud it usually makes me stop pressing it in shock :D I want a nautilus! it must wake the dead

I use other bikes occasionally and find their indicators a bloody Faff - press right for right left for left and something to cancel - simple and keep it that way!

i have to agree with satnav,

I will get used to the system, ill have to, but how do you throttle up and cancell the right turn indicator, loads of you will now tell me how, but i do find it hard.
i know how simple it is, left for left and right for right, yes. but i do find it cack handed, when trying to cancell.

i havnt gone for the horn (yet) so i cant comment.

i do agree that the starter is in the wrong place.

The BMW system is *&*&£%^(!!#&*#"£$@&^"*&.

It's like having T-ford pedals in all Ford-cars and all other cars have the normal setup.

There's no need to have three buttons to do the job that's accomplished so well but the standard one button system. The BMW system makes overtaking a real chore... using both hands (clutch & throttle) and both thumbs to twiddle with 3 buttons is just crazy (and dangerous).

The horn and light buttons are also in the wrong places; I realy have to focus on which buttons to use. And that's dangerous.

If BMW is reading this; change the switches, asap, or at least provide us with an alternative.

If any aftermarket electrickery-manufacturers reads this; I'll pay £50 to £100 without batting an eyelid to get normal stylish switches onto my bike.

This whole thing reminds me of "clever" programmers and designers of web pages who think they're doing something "cool" and "clever" like putting the menu on the bottom of a web-page... Just stuipid...

.... Feel better now... :D

PS, I ride a lot of different bikes all the times, didn't even have a problem with the Harley ones (maybe coz they don't go that fast ;) ), pressed the horn on the Aprilia RSV-R and the Husky, but that happened once; I've had the Beemer for 1100miles now, and I still have to focus on the buttons... Nicht Gut! NEIN!
