Hi there,

About two days ago, I was riding my GS onto the motorway, then suddenly it died. The RID doesn't seem to be working and the bike doesn't seem to fire although all other electrics are working normally.

It seems likely to me that the sidestand or the kill switch might be at the bottom of this, I have pulled the sidestand bit to pieces but nothing seems to be wrong, I haven't checked the kill switch yet but I am now wondering if the RID had died and that might be at the bottom of it, this being the case, can I bypass the RID to get it working in the meantime?

Thanks for any tips!

David

What do you mean by 'it doesn`t seem to fire' ?...

Is the starter motor turning the engine over but the bike isn`t firing up ??

Or is the starter motor not turning the bike over at all ??

These are two different faults with different causes.

Try shorting out the sidestand switch wiring rather than just pulling it apart and looking at it.

Also the kill switch, neutral switch and clutch cut out switch wiring/connections .

As for the RID unit..it won`t stop the bike from working.

Check fuse 3 (red/white wire if you see it ) for continuity with a meter (blade fuses can look ok but still be blown)

sory this is of no use, but the 1150 just does not go wrong..........

Thanks for the info, I'll have a look at a couple of those suggestions later.

When I say it won't start, what I mean is that I get no starter motor, no solenoid type noise, nothing at all in fact. The behaviour is the same as if the kill switch is on or if the sidestand is down. I can still hear the ABS click, click noise when I turn the key and the battery has plenty of juice.

don't overlook

the ignition wiring loom at the bottom of the key-holder. It is a common cause of loss of electrics.

Oh dear, I think you might be right there hops, just had a look under the tank and seen all kinds of melted wires and corroded connections :(

That doesn't look like the igmition loom - Have you got heated grips fitted ??

It's normally those that cause the type of problem that you have, when they short out.

This is the ignition loom , doesn't burn, just causes cutouts and electrical failure. Mainly due to being too tightly cable tied. Causing flex on the same small area all the time. Which breaks after a couple years or so

Thanks Steptoe.

I had a quick prod around the ignition connectors with my multimeter and all seemed to be well (although I'm no expert :))

I had a closer look at the wiring diagram and whilst the problematic melted wires don't seem to be related to the ignition, they do seem to be related to the kill switch and they are well knackered so it's probably best for me to replace that bit first then see what happens I guess.

It looks like a bit of a nightmare job to start cutting the wires back and soldering them all over the place, does anyone know how much of a difficult job it is to replace part of the loom entirely, or how much it might cost to pay someone to do it?

Thanks for all the tips so far.

David
