Anywhere but here!
It's been a long time, so here's another Surrey Wombat hunt. The only dates I can do next is Sunday 23rd November or Sunday 14th December. I may be tempted to do both, but please vote for which date you want.

The route is a popular trail ride using only legal Byways with hill climbs, mud, water, chalk, flint tracks and sand. We meet up at Newlands Corner car park near Guildford on the A25 - Dorking Road.

Streetmap is -

HERE

Be there or miss out on a fun day. Look forward to about 60/70 miles of dirt with a stop at a pub half way round for lunch. This is mostly for pogo stick bikes but any hero with a GS is more than welcome, please note that unless you are a riding god, at this time of year a large (above 650cc) GS type bike won't be fun! - I'll be using the G450X.

The start time is at 10:00 and expect to be back at the car park for 15:00

Please put a posting here if you intend to come along.

Roy.

Hi Bluesweeper - not sure which date but I'll make one of em on the GS - be aware, the worst "chalky" hill I know is Beggars Lane - and its closed as of last week for 6 months......let ya know soon;-)

Roy

I'd love to join you but I'm not registering my new mount (currently on the trailer outside M-I-L's where I now am) until 1 Jan 2009.

Look out for my old DR-Z on your travels - it found a new home in your neck of the weeks on Friday.

Greg

I'm certainly no riding god !!

But I will be coming on the 950 SE

There is probably one particular chalk climb that I would avoid though if memory serves me right .

both days are fine for me

If you do the December date i might be able to join you guys on my Africa Twin(if she is sorted by than:()
Would be nice to meet some members of this forum at last:bounce1:bounce1

I rode Sheepwalk Lane and then onto Drove Road a couple of weeks ago, there was a TRO on 4X4 vehicles but was still open for motorcycles. Didn't notice anything different for Beggars Lane, hope it's the same restriction as the 4x4's have trashed it.

Please all note that if you intend to come on a GS type bike, semi-road biased tyres will be totally useless! You will need proper knobblies.

Not really bothered either way with the dates. I will be on a KLX250.

I think that its Byway 137 that has a TRO on the stretch from the top of the ridge down the chalk hill that comes out in Gomshall/Abinger from the signs that were out yesterday and the info on the Surrey website.

mate of mine is a council ranger he said and I quote "some stupid pr1ck on a trails bike came off broke his leg and had to be airllifted out" which helped in the decision to close the lane also it's been ripped up by constant 4x4 traffic.

health and safety and the costs incurred by the rescue team was his other reasons which he sort of hinted at...

he's going to have a look during the week cos he's been asked to recover a couple of stolen cars from the woods I might go along try my winch out cos he's got the best get out a jail card going:thumb2

14ths definatly out for me, but dont let that spoil the fun!!!! just imagine if they closed a tarmac road evry time someone was injured!!!!!

Hi 14th Dec is best for me.

Knowing these little lanes around Shere quite well I'll definitely be on my toy off roader - lost count of how many times the GS ended up in its side on the way to and on Salisbury Plain yesterday - but it was very slippery after all that rain!!

Bugger, I can't do either date Roy :( Looks like I'll have to wait a while before my new toy gets dirty.:o

Thanks for organising another Wombat Hunt, Roy! :clap

Would have loved to join you after months (or is it years?) of abstinence but it looks like it's going to be the 14th when I have family commitments... :(

Oh well, there is always next time - I hope. :)

Have fun and take lots of pics! :thumb2

H Bluesweeper - its a different restriction - the notice specifically excludes motorcycles for several byways but explicitly INcludes for Beggars Lane. I've done it OK when dry on the GS, but after experiencing wet chalk yesterday I think it would be an emphatic no in the wet.

So, put me down for the 14th then please;-)
