Suspension problems on a GS1150 Adv

I have a BMW 1150GS Adventurer and it appears that when I turn the Preload Knob on the side from Low to standard to High there does not be much of a difference in the springing and the knob is easy to turn, have checked the screw and Knob and they are fine, The rebound damping is fine, Is this normal with a GS or does it mean a change of shock, any advice on shocks welcome if the opinion is the shock,
The front shock seems fine, The bike has done 25000 miles

The Preload adjuster is just a remote hydraulic system which compresses the spring in the same way that winding the adjuster nut up or down with a c spanner would do on a conventional system. The adjuster knob is the master cylinder and the cylindrical unit on the shock is the slave. It shouldn't be that stiff to turn but you should notice the back end becoming stiffer.If you look at the slave one the shock you should be able to see some movement as you wind the adjuster up and down. The pre-load assembly on my 1100 was fine at 35K but the damping screw had sheared.

are you making this adjustment with the bike on the centre stand or side stand?

Have the same problem on my 03 1150, 21k miles, rebound damping appears to be working but the bike is still bouncy on max preload.

Checked the tyre pressures and they are okay, the bike feels as if there is very little weight on the front wheel.

After some searching on here, I have come to the conclusion that the shock is gubbed.

I have ordered a Wilbers shock from revs racing after looking at some of the posts on here regarding them, I spoke to John who gave me good advice on the type of spring I needed for my weight and riding syle.

Revs Racing give us a 10% discount so the Wilbers shock came at the same price as the BMW repacement - £400.

Preload alteration only alters the Ride Height.................not the Spring Rate

The rebound damping is okay in the sense that when hitting a bump it recovers and does not continue to bounce along, but the overall feeling is that the back end is not as firm as it was.

I had a similar problem on My 51k miles`02 GSA. The adjuster didnt seem to do anything till at leats half way when it then felt as if it was doing something but unable to adsjt enough tofr 2 up with lugage. Now I am luck as the bike is under a AUB warantee and it turned out the shock had lost some of the oil out of the preload circuit. They cant fix this att e dealer so I got a brand shock fitted free of charge, and what a difference its made. I do wonder if the likes of Hagon or K-tec can rebuild them if you need to pay to fix it.
