Suspension query.

I've recently fitted a pair of Shock Factory suspension units to my 1200ST. This morning, I've put everything back together - very satisfying! However, on the old suspension, the rear tyre was around 1.5 to 2" off the ground with the bike on the centrestand. Since fitting the front unit, the tyre's now only 1/2" clear - with just the new rear on, clearance was the same as for the original. Am I right in thinking that the new front shock must be a bit longer than the original to have caused that? If so, what's the effect going to be on my bike - I'm thinking it'll be (much?) slower to turn in?

I'm waiting for a reply from SF to see what they say.

Well, it has altered the geometry and yes it'll be a little more reluctant to turn in but, in the real world how noticeable will it be?

I wouldn't be happy that it was that much longer by the way. I would want it the right length.

Could be the new front might be longer but have a lighter spring rate so that is gives a more pliant ride and greater travel , once it is off the stand is the bike sitting level or nose high ?

If it is nose high it will slow the steering down

I have the same thing with new shocks the bike is sitting approx. 1/2 inch higher but this should settle with use, so ride the bugger

Yes, I'd be happier too if it was exactly the same length and hadn't altered anything at all....much happier! Having said that, I had to send SF various info regarding my weight, pillion's weight, how often just me/2 up/luggage on or off etc etc, and the units are meant to be set up for my riding, so I suppose there could have been some adjustment to suit that. An RT front is approx 1.5" longer than the ST - coincidentally, the clearance I've 'lost' on the rear tyre! - a GS one a bit longer still.

It'll be interesting to see the reply from SF.

It depends how much sag there is with the weight of the bike and you compressing the springs, which depends on spring rate and preload.
If you've quality suspension, it's worth getting it set up right.
