Suspension upgrades

Hi all,

I am running a 2000 R850GS and love the bike.

Sometimes the bike shows its flaws by bottoming out on green lanes and being a bit wallowy over flowing B roads

Has anyone had experience of upgrading stock shocks with hyperpro, ohlins or other.?

Wilbers front and back on my 11. Massive upgrade IMHO.

I’ve put Ohlins on my bikes for quite a few years now, it’s the first upgrade I make on them. Really the best modification you can make.

YSS front and rear at around 57,000 miles on my 1150 great improvement over stock.
Bought my new suspension from Firefox racing who I would not recommend, but the YSS stuff seems well made.

I fitted Ohlins to my 1100. Transformed the back end - less noticeable at the front. There were concerns raised about the fragility of Ohlins but I didn’t have the bike long enough to see any problems.

For those that have bought ohlins, where did you get them from?

I've looked at ebay and lots are based in Italy

Be sure to fit a 180nM rear spring though as the supplied 140nM spring isn’t man enough for luggage and pillion

+1 for Ohlins, however be prepared to get them "serviced" periodically, they don't seem as robust as OE stuff but they really improve the ride and handling of the GS.CheersJohn B

DenzO rebuilds with the correct weight spings would be the budget option, then Hagon, Ikon and YSS, then, how much do you want to spend....Nitron, K tech, Maxton, Wilbers, Hyperpro, Ohlins.........
If you've a local suspension specialist, talk to them.

I've got two springs for my rear shock. Mekes a big difference when I'm riding heavy on the rough stuff.

I have Fournales on mine. Been on there for about 350k now and still work like the day I put them on.

Ohlins are great if you have them stripped and serviced every 15-20k but hardly anyone does that.

This; i just fitted the Hyperpro spring to the standard shock and that sorted it out for me.

I’ve ohlins on my r1150gs. The rear one is like triggers broom. It’s had a piston and last time a body…..the spring hydraulic preload and probably the shims are still original great improvement over stock though. Front has only ever been serviced (which means only seals have been replaced)

Most GS are undersprung on the rear for the weight they are designed to carry

Interesting. I had a heavier spring fitted on my rear Ohlins but I’ve always thought it still felt bouncy / not up to the job. I’ll go and see if it’s a 180nM one in a bit when it warms up. If not, I’ll get one put on.

Most Tossers are heavy, then maybe add a pillion and/or luggage (like heavy metal panniers) and the rear spring needs an upgrade to a heavier variant
I made the mistake early on in my GS career and blew a few sets of shock seals and preload adjusters
Fitted a 180 spring and no further issues
