Swing arm bearings. .. fooked or not...

Whilst stripping the rear end for mikeyboy to work some magic on the rear drive I thought I'd grease and clean everything. ..

So are these bearings supposed to have play in them or not.

They are taper roller bearings, as long as they feel smooth when pushed in and turning at the same time.
The play is taken up when you refit the swingarm studs and tighten to the correct torque.

Ah yes. I've just found out they are tapers.... as the middle roller has just fell out. They don't feel smooth so I recon I'll change them.

7Nm so the book says.

RH bearing is goosed, the race has grooves worn in it.

Now just got to get the inner bearing races out of the sodding swing arm.

How I did it..... the inner races...unless you have a puller of course.

Find a socket that fits against the inner face of the bearing.

Insert a long extension bar through opposite bearing and into socket.... tap it out.

Pops out easily... heat may help and keep the new ones in the freezer to pop in as soon as the old one pops out...

Thanks chaps. Yes I used the swing arm thread.

I used some heat and a long threaded bar in the lip of the inner race. Boshed them both out in one hit.

Collecting a new set from williams manchester tomorrow and a new gaiter...... £73

The OEM taper rollers are a non standard size. Refusing to pay the silly money price, I tried a pair of SKF angular contact ball bearings that exist in the same dimensions as the BMW tapers. They went in as they should and after 6K miles are showing no signs of trouble.

Good stuff, always good to hear someone willing to experiment with none OEM parts. Keep us posed on the other swing arm thread how they feel after 12k
