Anyone got any ideas on this one.

What I thought was going to be a straight forward job could be turning into a nightmare.

The previous owner of this ST has put in some homemade stainless steel covers, great idea that is until the unsuspecting next owner tries to remove them. I have so far started to drill a small hole in the middle to see how thick they are and so far am at about 3mm, have thought about getting the Dremmel out or maybe trying some sort of puller.

Anyone had to do anything like this or know a special tool or way of getting this off?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

And there's not a recess - in the rim at the bottom edge - you can get purchase on to lever them out? Rubber sucker?

Try tapping around the edge with a cold chisel first

If you don’t want to reuse them then a small pilot hole for a self tapper in a slide hammer would do the trick if you can get hold of one

No recess at all and am starting to think they may be pretty solid, looking like it may keep me out of trouble for the rest of the Winter.

Never used a slide hammer before. Can you tell me what I am looking for and how they work?

Thank you all so much for taking the time

Is this the sort of slide hammer that may work

Does this look like it may do the job or is it rubbish?

You need a self tapper welded to a length of bar, with a stop, nut?, on the other end, then a weight you can slide on it.
Have you got an old wood chisel (sharper than a cold chisel) that you could tap round the edge?

3 mm sounds a lot. Try getting trough it. Tap and screw in a grease nipple then using a grease gunn simply pump it off. JJH

If you're going to tap it, you could use a bolt to jack it off.

How would I jack it off with a bolt?

Never had to do anything like this before as it does seem like it is a pretty solid bit of stainless

Drill all the way through, tap the hole, run a bolt in until it comes up against the spindle, it'll then start to push the plug out.

Get it now Thank you.

Just being cautious but what size bolt should I try would a larger one be better or smaller and is there any chance I could damage the pivot bolt?

Cheers again for all the help am starting to feel a little happier now.

The easiest would be drill 5mm tap M6, take it steady tapping, you don't want a broken tap adding to the adventure.

Bear in mind that the pivot pin behind that cover will have a recess for an allen key so any bolt you insert will have to be larger than that recess to push the cap off by screw action. The cap should be a push fit, so inserting a relatively small screw or self tapper and using a mole grip to pull it off might be worth a try first.

Not trying to teach your granny to suck eggs :D but drilling into stainless you need cobalt drill bits.

They are much harder bits and stay sharp, drill slowly and dip the bit into water occasionally you'll make it much easier to get through.

When you drill slowly you will see more stainless material coming off the tip. Drill fast and the bit get hot and blunts it.

Cheers for the tip I did not know that

Thank you, I wish it were a push fit but it's a lump of homemade stainless pain in the ****

Yep, that’s a slide hammer, one of the caps to the left of the handle will have a hole so that you can tighten a self tapper to the hammer, there are even some suitable looking screw type things to the right of the handle

These are usually used by panel beaters for pulling dents out etc and by scrotes for pulling ignition barrels out before we had start/stop buttons
