Sad day..............
A12 at 6:00am this morning .... and bang ......

Swinging arm has shattered, failed with all that entails......

Ended up laying on its side in the middle of the A12

Has anyone else had this happen? I'll get some pictures up when I can....

What to do next...... :nenau

Crumbs Terry, thats bad, how about taking it back to the place you bought it from, you couldn't have dome many miles on is, considering your previous issue. You must have some protection from sale of goods act surely?

I've heard of a few broken swingarms but only seen one with my own eyes..

Where's Rasher.........................:nenau

Rasher to the BMW Warranty and Customer Care Line.......................anxious 12GS rider on line#2 for you:D

driveshaft uj failure perhaps taking the casing with it?
had a uj go on my 08 gsa.

bad

hope your ok fella bimy another thing to think of at 80 on the motorway

First off I hope your ok. Second and it really depends on how it failed but this is way beyond a warranty claim or good will, this could have killed you. Third and its up to you but don't say anymore here and get a lawyer. If you want to go further then talking about it here will harm your case. If your not interested going that route then spill the beans.

Hi,
It's a 57 plate 1200 GSA ..... Think it's out of warranty somehow..... and yes it looks abit like that one......

Not going to say anything too dirogitory.....

Riding along the A12.. 70 mph.... and bang slap slap slap tilt:nenau

I had a couple of issues with my GT well out of warenty. Both were sorted. Cruise control went speed happy. No probles with BMW, easily sorted by dealer. Then a cam issue at 50K. Good support from the dealer but I ended up writing a few letters. Once, with the dealers support, I got past "customer services" to somebody who could see it was not wear and tear it was sorted.

Glad you are ok.

Looks like a failure of the alloy casting to me, don't think the UJ is to blame as although pulled off the final drive when the casting broke, does look to be in one piece mechanicaly.
Bloody scary looking failure

Jeez, that is a bit scary - straight line line is scary enough, Imagine having it go half way round a long sweeping bend

Steppers, what are your thoughts ......

Your lucky to be posting here mate.

I would be well mad with that. And I probably wouldn't buy another BMW!!! Let the flaming start.

Why do we pay premium prices for a bike? (The GS is a very expensive bike for what you get). Because its a BMW and its supposed to work alright (We are buying into the badge). That one hasn't. And if it can be proved its a manufacturing fault I would be getting legal help.

I think your lucky to be alive.
