I see from USA forums that BMW are replacing the handlebar switches free of charge on RT's from 2010 onwards as they are acknowledging that these switches are prone to being crap😏.
Bet that BMW in the UK will not follow suit!

My R1200RT (2012) had the faulty switch (left side).....after lots of investigating on the net and realising that in some parts the switches were getting replaced f.o.c I emailed a couple of dealerships and they said they hadn't heard of this, I emailed BMW customer services and they said the same.
I booked the motorcycle into BMW in Aberdeen and they replaced the switch for half price, on the condition that I had full BMW service history, which I had.
Its a little annoying that in some parts of the world it is free of charge but not in rip off UK

The left hand switches were replaced under warranty on my 2012 RT and they're sticking on my GS LC, so that will be a warranty job in spring

Ive had both sides changed F.O.C last year (out of warranty) on a 2010 model.

The economic downturn/recession/crash has rippled throughout the world, and has forced the majority of (if not all) companies to reduce the manufacturing cost of their products in order to maintain or increase their profit margins.
The only way they can do this is to have cheaper components fitted to their products, this means basically inferior quality components, and products built to a cost, so switches and the like are just gonna be cheap shite, but, tiz the way of the world and as long as customers put up with cheap shite products, then the big boys will keep making them cheaper.
They don't want the product to last, they want to sell you a new one every couple of years....... built in obsolescence!
You pay £15k for a product with faulty switch gear?? Greeaat.....

I had the "nearside" switch replaced switch replaced under warranty on our 2013 Twincam RT. (Cruise Control would not engage). When I picked up the bike my dealer told me they had also changed the "offside" switch as they to are known to give trouble. Four thousand miles later the "nearside" switch began to play up again. Another replacement switch was ordered whilst my dealer negotiated with BMW over who should pay. The replacement (2nd) switch was fitted whilst I waited and this prompty failed whilst the bike was in the workshop so another was ordered and fitted a couple of weeks later (on back order from Germany). This latest switch is different in appearance to the previous two so hopefully the insides have been beefed up as well. My dealer was great throughout but I was annoyed that at no time during this escapade did BMW admit there is a problem and that they would in fact supply and fit the replacements free of charge.

There is another way, how many of us would rather pay more for our bikes if it means that the "quality" of components and general finish befitting a premium German product are maintained. I know I would.
