Synology NAS

Anyone using one of these?

Im thinking of getting one, possibly the Synology DS216j Play with 2 x 3TB drives, and storing it out of the way in my loft, connected by ethernet cable.

Are they easy to set up and use?

very highly rated - I use Qnap - but a few storage techies at work prefer the Synology kit for SME/SOHO use...

We use a sinology NAS in the office

Yes I'm using one. Pretty straight forward to set up. Just follow the on screen instructions. Once done you'll see it as a network drive and you can drag and drop files into it.

Great, drag and drop was what I was hoping. They do get good reviews.

Can it be treated like any other external hard drive to create different folders to store files/photos etc?

Yes. That's exactly what I use it for.

The great advantage of these, apart from backups, is that they can be accessed from different machines. So if you have a pc and a laptop or multiple laptops they will all be able see the drive because it is exactly what it says on the tin. Storage attached to your network or as they put it NAS.
