tank range

...eeerrrr think I might be doing something wrong....
Just back from a trip down to Spain and back......on the faster sections when we needed to make up time I was seeing 32mpg with full luggage on an 08 GSA.
but the tank Will take more than the 35 Litres stated in the handbook, when caught short I needed 35.5L and the fuel guage was still showing a few miles left and it will go at least 20 miles showing zero...

Theres also drilling holes in things to consider:augie

read the whole thread there are some potential hazards with this mod.
:jibber

I did this mod to my 05 model and the most I got was 330 miles. Now I have an 08 model with the plastic neck and the most I can get is about 220. I still think that there is an air gap at the top of the tank when full that could be utilised when your on a run. Anyone done the mod on the new model?

Tank range 2008 GS

Hi All,

For what its worth, i brimmed my tank the other day and to started with did a 70 mile motorway and cruising trip. The rest has been stop and start trips around town and in the middle of this i put on a set of Remus Headers and end can :)

The warning light came on at 145 miles saying i had 40 miles left, i then did a further 35 miles and the computor said 6 miles left, i chickened out then and filled it up. 18.6 litres to brim it again. i guess that works out about 200 mile for a tank full.

For info the riding was quite quick and heavy on the throttle and popping a few wheelies:o

On a personal note, the bike is now 2 months old and ive done about 1400 miles, ive read all the posts since i got the bike and as for:

petrol used = i dont care i love it

cost of bike = i dont care i love it

relability ( not broke down myself) = i dont care i love it

£1800 on accessories = i dont care i love it

bank managers letters = i dont care i love it

ta ra :bounce1

I get around 210 to 220 miles between fill ups with around 10 to 20 miles to empty on the read out. Bike is then put on the centre stand for a full to the brim fill (minus rubber restrictor thingy).

The bike is an '05 normal 1200GS.

I have noticed that fuel economy does seem to be getting better and oddly more consistent with age and mileage. The bike has done almost 34,000 miles now.

Just come back from a trip to the Alps.I kept a note of all fuel used,58.9 gallons,2881.1 miles fully dressed and not hanging about I got 49mpg(if my math is up to snuff:mmmm)which fully loaded on normal unleaded i thought was pretty good best tank range i got was 231miles doing the last 6 showing zero miles left on the display,do not know how much further I could have gone as the Hotel got in the way!
squashed in 21.3 litres when I filled it up.

Well, I was just about to post a similar question meself and I found this thread.

Mine (08 GS, c.4000 miles) seems to have a huge variation in tank range. Tootling around the Vosges and Alsace last week, I got 210 miles before the light came on. Honking back towards Le Havre on the Autoroute, I struggled to get more than 125/135 (twice!). Weird - the last 1200 was much more consistent, or had a narrower range of consumption. I'm sure my style hasn't changed that much!

ISTR it's just a question of putting your fingers in there and hoicking it out.

But you might want to check the FAQs on this site first .... !

Kai

Thx for that - just checked out th FAQ area and the thread in that seem ot show a cpirture of a slightly different metal edged filler - so guess the '08 is differenty anyone know if the restrictor tube inside the neck of the '08 filler does just pull out?

OK I found some good pictures of the "rubber thing" and what it looks like as fitted in the fuel filler in this Advrider thread
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=290873&page=2&highlight=Fuel+Filler

Main problem is that is not what the '08 filler looks like so I don't think you can do the same trick on the '08 - glad I didn't pull out the only thing in the filler that could be described as a 'rubber thing' :blast

'(08 GS, c.4000 miles) seems to have a huge variation in tank range.' Of course there are an enormous number of variable factors to be considered and whatever answer you come up with will only apply to YOu on one particular journey, at a CERTAIN weather condition and pPARTICULAR traffic conditions. Oil temperatues & viscosity, tyre pressures and condition, luggage, weight carried, height of rider/pillion. Thus we see variations from 32 mpg to twice that!

Best ever for me was 256 miles before putting 21.5 ltrs back in. '05 GS with the fuel filler mod done. This was on a trip down to Dublin and I wasn't riding with economy in mind, but happily crusing @ around the 70/75 mark on the motorways and making good progress on the A roads.

Who cares?:nenau

When it's nearly empty, fill it up again, have fun emptying it again, when it's nearly empty.....fade to end.....

That don't help when you are 45 Miles from a pump with 40 miles left in the tank :nenau

The thing to do is actually run the thing out of juice whilst carrying a spare can of juice so there aint no surprises on a trip.
Just been on a trip and two of 'em had no idea how far they could go on a tank!

So don't leave it so long until you fill up. It's not rocket science.

Ever tried filling up in France on a Sunday at an automatic pump with a Brit credit card?It aint always that easy. The first thing I ever do with any new vehicle be it bike or car is find out how far I gan go on one full tank.

P.S One only has to establish the figure once.....

There's lovely.

I don't.
Never have done.

Especially not when my bike gives me a countdown range.

modernisation

There is no rason why your card should not work in France now that the UK have finally discovered PIN. If your bank cannot assure you that your card is compatible with machines here i would change your bank!

There's lovely..........Sorry Not Welsh:aidan

Who said you were? :nenau

And you think running the bike dry once is an accurate way of telling how far you can go?:nenau

You ride your bike the same way on the same roads at the same speed every time you take it out huh?
Get real fella.
