Didn't know where to put this shyte so you lot are getting it
When we were over on Islay we went to a new distillery at Kilchoman. It's part of a farm and is very small.
The whisky they make is too new to sell as whisky so they're flogging miniature sized samples as " New Spirit" and in the interests of science, education and our own gratification, we bought a couple to try.
They come with all the info on the labels, ours was distilled on the 23rd of april last year and bottled from a bourbon cask on the 23rd of March this year at 63.5%...
Oh, and it's got 50 ppm peating.
We're going to try it against some 16 year old Jura at 40%.
( I have tried " New Spirit" before
but always tooooo much and all I could really say about that was that it gave me a rite sair heed. )
Someone who knows what they're talking about might say ' Pale and obviously young as it hasn't taken it's colour from the cask'
I'll go with ' Peely-Wally'
" Swirling it in the glass shows an developing oily-ness hinting at strengths to come with maturity, nosing reveals peat with scents of sea weed,apples,iodine and grass, on the palate it reveals an eagerness to impress and will be sensational on maturity"
I think it looks like voddy, smells like a refinery and tastes like shyte..with a hint of peat.
Can ye even tell it's in the glass?
(My co-testers comment was " Farkin hell. that's raw"..)
Must say- the after taste is nice and satisfying, not so sure about the stinging sensation on my tongue though.
Next up, the 16 year old Jura at 40%
" Soft and rich with strong hints of brown sugar on nosing, sweet, rich and strong"
Aye, right. Tastes feckin brilliant
It's going to be at least another 8 years before a proper comparison can be made and by that time my taste buds are going to be shot to hell but I wish Kilchoman all the very best and will be waiting to try the real stuff when it comes out
